Subject: Great quote....had to share....

Message:
Maybe it's the impending winter-storm-from-hell that is said to befall us here over the weekend, but I'm feeling rather melancholy. I came across this quote, and wanted to share. Oh, NGF is great!!

“The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”

Melissa,

I live my life by this philosophy, and I have the sense that you,
Barbara and so many women on this forum do, as well! I started
in advertising back before hardly any women were in
management, there was all kinds of harassment, etc., and
everyone kept saying women had to stick to very specific roles
within the industry. So needless to say, it only movitated me
even more and I since enjoyed being promoted into
management many times at many corporations.

Melissa and Barbara, each of you runs successful businesses,
and there was a time when it was unheard of a woman to run her
own business - let alone reaching customers through the
Internet, TV shopping, etc. And Barbara, you worked in the
music industry which was notoriously male-oriented for years.

Then there are friends like Ruth who is providing such a superb
education to her children at home - remember when that was
unheard of, too?

I could go on and on, but I think having people say "it's not
possible" really fires us up. I know it's gotten me into a few
heated verbal battles with narrow-minded doctors!

Whew, forgive me for going on and on. I can't even blame any
impending storms, although we're having those hot, dry winds,
so that must be the cause.

Melissa, I've been feeling melancholy, too, so thank you for
helping me get my good adrenaline going a bit today!

Jill, you're so articulate - I just love it. Appeals to the side of me that got the BA in English. It sounds like you've done amazingly well - you should be very proud. Yeah for strong women!
I was in business for a full year before I even told anyone in my family - just didn't want the negativity. Thank God for a supportive husband. Yes, we're strong women, but we all need someone behind us holding us up when we wanna fall.
Barbara, I can tell by talking to you on the phone that you're a VERY strong southern woman - wouldn't wanna mess with you! (wink, wink) Didn't know you worked in the music biz. I'm sure you have great stories to tell!
No matter who you are and what you do, it's important to have a voice. And to know when - and how - to use it.
May you all have a spectacular evening.

Jill~ things are only impossible if you believe they are impossible. Me Mum used to say "can't never could!" And my Dads view was always, always, "nothing ventured, nothing gained!"
It takes a bit of "gall" to go against the grain, but I am not exactly shy, as many of you are not! I think our *likenesses*, (new word,) likenesses are greater than our differences on this board and that is the cheese that binds us so tightly.

Thanks for that, Jill! Somedays I question my sanity and find it easier and more apropos to question my INsanity! But I hang in there and try new things to keep them interested and motivated.

You've always been such a support and such an angel, Jill, in the midst of your own illness and problems.
Thank you!

Well Melissa, at least it isn't one of those overused words we throw around! And it is kinda catchy, in its own right!
Moi, Jill is right. I don't know how in the world you do all you do.....It is well beyond my capabilities. And Jill is a sweet pea isn't she?
Jill I think you should be a writer. You are so mellifluous.

Barbara,

Thank you for saying I should be a writer - because I am a
professional writer and have been since 1980. I started on the
marketing/business side of advertising and switched to the
creative side many moons ago. Plus to keep the creative juices
flowing, I've had wonderful opportunities given to me by trusting
people that led to my writing a magazine column, articles, even
a book - doors opened that really allowed my creativity to be
challenged. So thank you for saying that I'm melliflous, because
there are days that the Lyme acts up in my brain and it's a
challenge to find those right words!

And Ruth, I second Barbara's sentiment that we are in awe of
your own creativity and patience that is required to keep coming
up with stimulating educational projects and assignments for
your kids. Personally, I was terrible in math in school, I can't
even imagine if I had to teach it to youngsters! I don't know how
you are able to teach such a spectrum of subjects!

I just found out that yesterday there was a fire in the canyon by
the neighborhood that is adjacent to mine. I don't know how I
missed the sound of all the fire engines. Fortunately it was put
out just as the flames had arrived in one neighbor's back yard. It
is suspected that it was arson by teenagers - arrgh!! And also
yesterday, as I was emailing back and forth with a Lyme pal in
Malibu, the Malibu fire was getting closer to her house. I give
thanks that everything turned out fine for the people I know
whose homes were in harm's way. Those hot Santa Ana winds
that we get can be so dangerous!!

Take care everyone,
Jill

OMG Jill,
I have wonder how close you or Moi might be to any of that. I know Moi is further away from it than you are, but just being in the same state with that kind of threat is harrowing.
Your skills to communicate are awe inspiring. What is the name of your book? and who is the publishing company?

Barbara,

Ruth and I can vouch for the frequency and ferocity of the fires that get started during our Santa Ana winds or simply due to drought. The fire near me yesterday was a small one - not something that was on the national news like the ones in Malibu and near the Anaheim Hills in Orange County. But a couple of years ago, there were several horrendous fires throughout San Diego that wiped out entire beautiful neighborhoods - I know people who lost homes.

You are very sweet to inquire about the book I wrote. I doubt you could even find it anywhere except the gift shop of the hospital that hired me. I was hired by a hospital I was doing advertising and medical writing for at the time (Little Company of Mary - they have hospitals in Southern California, Chicago and elsewhere). They decided they wanted to have a book written about the nuns that founded the order in Europe and then came to the U.S. and opened hospitals. The reasons were twofold: the hospitals anniversary, but more importantly, so many of the Sisters are elderly and no one had really documented their wisdom and story. So basically I was hired to research the whole thing and then ghostwrite it for the hospital, although my name is on the inner credits but not on the cover.

I had a blast interviewing the nuns in person and by phone. At first I was intimidated and worried that they would be stern and I might say something improper (although I'm not one to use foul language too often!!). But some of them had the most wonderful senses of humor and even told stories that were a bit on the risque side!

Perhaps someday we will all get to meet and have a pajama party and I'll bring the book along.

Take care,
Jill
