Message: Hi JP,
Hermit crab huh? Now that smarts!
Is the nail split down the side. Is it creased in the middle, (side to side) so that it will just "grow out"? Did he crab clamp down on the nail or was it really close to or on the matrix/base of the nail? Is there blood under the nail? When did it happen?

Message: JP we are not health care providers, so this is not medical advise. Nothing will replace your physicians instructions. But we are pretty practical women with years of lifes' experiences.
Keep the area clean, using hydrogen peroxide. During the day, wrap the wounded area with a soft piece of gauze with Neosporin applied. This will help keep the possibility of infection at bay, and protect the finger from further "bumps and bruises". At night, remove the wrapping and cleans the area again. Use a Batadine wash and hydrogen peroxide. Allow the wounded area to remain exposed to the air for the evening hours. If the nail can be clipped down close to the fingertip, then I would suggest you do that to avoid it bumping or possibly snagging anything. As long as there is no damage to the matrix, the nail will indeed grow out. Just be very aware of the injury and avoid further injury. Hope some of this helps. Keep us posted on your progress.
