Subject: Nail Ridges & splits
Message: 3 problems.
1. I have had a split right thumb nail for nearly 15 years. I've been told by a manicure expert that it was caused by an injury to my cuticle many years ago. I don't recall injuring my cuticle. Is there a cure?
2. All of my nails have ridges, are weak and split easily. Is there a cure?
3. What is in your product that cures split nails with ridges?
Thank you.

Message: I have only 1 nail (thumb nail) with ridges. I don't keep my nails very long, but I have a couple that want to turn under as they grow. Can you give me some tips or advice?

Message: Anonymous: I want to post a link to a site, but it's been disabled... your nail tech is right though, but that's not the only factor that causes these ridges. Systemic disorders, poor health, and other things from the body can cause this... I'm going to attempt through a source to get a copy of that site so I can add some of the information to my site for you guys. But I'm not sure if I can get it or not.
Trudy, try hydrating your nails EVERYDAY. Use Solar Oil and rub it in to your nail plate and put a drop under each nail too. What happens is, nails get dehydrated and curl this way and that way...
Your nails have layers and bands. When your nail peels, layers are coming off... sometimes the bands in the underside of the nail are "shorter" than the ones on the top and they pull the nail down as they grow out. Moisture can help this situation to an extent, but not completely. A little bit is better than nothing.
Nails split for numbers of reasons. Dehydration, trauma to the nail itself, trauma to the root of the nail, picking, chewing, biting, abuse in general.
*****NOT TO MENTION****
How you file your nails!
************************
File only from the side to the center, NEVER saw back and forth across the nail!
Sawing just promotes breakage and splitting,
!!!!!!!REMEMBER!!!!!!!
SIDE to CENTER
NEVER SAW back and forth.

Message: I have ridges but no discoloration to my finger nails. My nails rip before being fully grown which is painful and it takes a long time before they are grown enough for me to cut them. I always knew that you shouldn't file your nails back and forth but when I go for a manicure, that's how she files them. After seeing a few manicurists, I thought it was just fiction that the way you file your nails was important. It makes you wander what school some of the manicurists attend.

Message: I had a ridge on the side on my right thumbnail and so I
thought I could just file it down. Well it has turned into a
nightmare. Now what is left is a sliver of nail on the very
edge, nothing in the middle and down by the cuticle, a
dark, dried-blood spot and a very thick ridge growing
out but disconnected from the skin! Ugh! I'll try the solar
oil. I've been putting a lot of Vitamin E on it + iodine +
tee tree oil, but alas, it stays the same, and maybe it's
getting worse! Can anyone help?!

Message: My 14 year old son's right thumbnail split last summer, from the root up, after a trauma to it. It continues to grow, but still with the split from the root. There are unsightly ridges lengthwise up the nail also. Now his lift nail is showing evidence of a small split at the root end, although we know of know trauma to it. (The skin on his hands are very dry also)

Message: I am hoping you might be able to help me as no-one else has been able to. I have had a damaged fingernail for over 3 years now - it is split (just in a little from the side of the nail) from the top of the nail (white part) right down to and into the pink part for a short way. It is my little finger and I have no idea how it happened. I always look after my nails and have always had nice nails - I do not bite them, chew on them etc. The problem is that each time it grows the split grows with it and if I don't cut it short it catches on everything and tears it (actually even when it is cut it still catches). I have tried everything I can think of (used various products) and spoken to everyone I can think of - and nothing has helped. Please, any help and advice you are able to give me would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for your time. Joyce

Message: My middle finger sustained moderate frostbite on the fingertip which caused the nail to separate from the bed. My doctor removed the fingernail; the bed is viable and healthy. Does anyone know of a treatment so that the nail will grow back with normal shape, color and texture?
Thank you.
