Subject: Want to see my sister smile this summer.
Message: My beautiful twin sister lost all of her toe nails from a toe nail disease. They had to take everyone of them off, and she was told by her doctor that they will never grow back, and they didn,t. Summer time is very hard for her, she hides her feet. She loves sandals and it makes me so sad when I see her looking at them in the stores, knowing that she will not allow herself to wear them. Is there such a thing as fake toenails? I want to see my twin sister with a smile on her face wearing sandals.Help will be appreciated.

Message: Hi Lynn! Boy, I don't know as I have any advice or hope for you, but you are a sweet sister to research this. I used to work in a podiatry office and people do find that difficult to deal with afterwards because they kill the nail root to do this. As you know, after the toenails are removed, what forms is just a hard layer of skin, somewhat like a callous. The only replacement I could imagine would be acrylics or gel overlays, however you would be affixing that to her skin with glue. I don't even know as a nail tech would want to take that one on, for fear of complications. Further, if the nails were removed because of a bad fungal infection, you wouldn't want to encourage fungus to start growing under any artificial covering. Has she asked her doctor about any possibilities?
Your sister has probably tried polishing that layer of skin. That can be done safely in Summer, but I would recommend she use light colored polishes that won't show irregularities as opposed to dark colors like red that would also seep into the skin. Also, no acetone polish removers on that skin underneath.
I'm sorry. I'm sure this is distressing to her!

Message: Lynn,
When I was in Valdosta last summer at my hairdressers, one of her clients came in with the most beautiful toenails I have ever seen. She was flying out to the Bahamas for a wedding and found fake toenails at Wal Mart or K mart or Target, something like that. I don't know if they are readily available everywhere though. Never noticed them myself at the local stores, but I don't really "look" for them either. Check your local shops. Try a google search, you may come up with something. Hope this will do it!

Message: Wal Mart! That is where she got the little french manicure toenails! Wal Mart!
Let us know if they adhere to the surface of the toe without benefit of the nails.

Message: i've also seen them at my local eckerd drug store too. i'm sure there are nail techs that do toes as well. while i was at my hairdressers waiting last month, looking through a Nail Pro magazine, i saw many acrylic toenails that looked great. short and french seemed to be the "thing". what a wonderful alternative for women that have had to have their toenails removed. doing them for the summer would be so much easier when your feet CAN be in sandals all season. probably the only time i ever recommend getting acrylics put on, as long as it didn't cause more toe health problems. i would miss my toenails too.
