Subject: Help me!!
Message: I found this site on a search engine and am in a bit of trouble. My doctors are closed, and I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask but here goes;
Christmas Eve, a friend of mine accidently smashed the door open, not realising my bare foot was in the way, and my toenail has been (almost) shoved off.
It's still attatched but has lifted up, and I'm in extreame pain and I don't know what to do.
Do I rip it off? How can I pad it? I've bandaged it up and that, but I haven't been able to leave the house for 4 days because it hurts so much to put a shoe on it!
I'm becoming more and more aware this isn't really where I should be posting this, so I'm very sorry.. But I just dont know what to do. :(

Message: Lora - I used to work for a podiatrist's office and saw some nasty toe accidents. First, you probably have swelling under the nail, perhaps even some pooling blood, that is creating that throbbing pressure. You've probably been elevating it, which is good. I wouldn't take the nail off yourself, for risk of infection. If there is an area separated and popped up you could gently trim just to make bandaging easier. You really need to be seen, preferably by the emergency room or a podiatrist. You may even need an Xray. (Your internist could refer you to a podiatrist. They reserve emergency time during their day and chances are they could squeeze you in today if you can get someone to drive you there. They do Xrays as well.)
Look around in your old sneaks, slippers and sandals to see what you can use on that foot. Cut the top off if you must. Put a little Polysporin or any antibiotic ointment you might have on hand to dull the pain a bit and apply your bandage. If it is snowy/wet out, put a baggy over the whole deal. Taking aspirin or Advil might help a teensy bit with inflammation.
I hope you can get in today for some help. I'm throbbing for you!

Message: Lora,
Take Lynnies advise and get to a podiatrist's office asap. Keep us all posted with any information you receive from him/her. I wish you well with this. It can be most painful.
