Subject: Slow Grow theory???
Message: Hi, sistas, I'm now 3 weeks into it. What I notice - pink beds, a nice sheen from weekly buffing, supple cuticles and teensy WHITE tips. Woo hoo, what an improvement! What I do wonder about is the slow growth at present. My nails are so strong I'm not filing at all except to catch the occasional irregularity with my Wonderstone file.
So, let me throw this possibility out there. When I had acrylics, I'd start out with them square. By the end of a couple weeks, they would become "squoval". From just friction of everyday living they would wear down. Based on that, do you think it's possible that the daily rubbing could wear down length of my NGF nails in the same way? I'm pretty vigorous with the rubbing. Maybe I should be gentler on the tip area? What do you think?

Message: Well one thing is for sure. Most of you started this process during the worst season. The cold plays into this in a big way. Everything is sort of dormant during the hibernation season. The nails growth rate is naturally slower during this time period. I don't believe the rubbing on the tips will cut in on the progress. And I really do like the term "squoval"! Wish I had been the one to come up with that one.
You keep using the formula and come spring, when we start to thaw out, and our "sap" starts to flow again, your nails will take off. By then you will have a fine start on you goals.

Message: Lynnie - there are lots and lots of things that affect the rate at which our nails grow - here are some things I found, some quite interesting....like I don't think it's fair that men's nails grow faster than mine.....:o(
Growth
Nails grow constantly: approximatly 0.1 mm per day and an average of 3 to 5 mm. per month.
Nail growth rate: Is affected by a number of activities and environmental conditions. For example, during the summer, nails grow faster than in winter.
Nails grow faster on the longest finger and on the predominant hand.
Fever and serious illness slow the growth rate, while pregnancy enhances it.
Minor trauma such as nail biting also stimulates nail growth, while a sedentary lifestyle and a poor nutrition slow it.
Nails grow at a faster rate in men and younger people.
Toenails grow at one half to one third the rate of fingernails.
Why do nails grow at different rates -
Just as the skin is stimulated by friction to produce a callus, injury to nails can provoke healing by stimulating the matrix to regenerate the nail at a faster rate.
During the day, hands are more active, which results in an increase in blood flow and at the same time, nails and fingers are subjected to repeated mild traumas that causes nails to grow faster.
Longer fingers get exposed to more trauma, those fingers tend to grow faster than their counterparts.
During the summertime we tend to be more active, our blood circulation increases, we are warmer, causing our nails to grow faster.
Toenails grow slower than fingernails because toes are less mobile than fingers and blood circulation is less effective in the feet.
Pregnant women however, have an elevated metabolic rate which increases nail growth during those months.
Age is a very important factor because of the general body condition, the metabolism, blood circulation, activity and health are generally at their highest level in younger persons, thus making nail growth optimal compared to the later stage of life.

Message: Lynnie,
I was 4 weeks into it when I woke up one day and thought, wow, where did those come from (speaking of my nails). It took that long before I noticed any change in the rate of growth. Now, also factor in the time of year you're doing this. The weather is colder, you're busy busy thinking (maybe stressing) over other things, so who knows. Lot's of things could be factored in.

Message: Barb - I think Deb might have coined "squoval" over on Q. So right you are about winter when it comes to hair and nails. Although, gee, my grey roots are always anxious to grow in! I just started taking Biotin and hope that will make a difference in the rate of growth. I tried prenatal vitamins a couple months ago, but found them upsetting to my stomach.
Deb - Thanks! You are chocked full of great tidbits and found it fascinating too. You always come through with well thought and researched advice here and elsewhere. Let's not talk about men and their long eyelashes and fingernails. That was definitely a gender mistake from the Big Guy when he made the blueprints!
Moi! I remember when you hit your 4 weeks. That will be next weekend, so I'm planning New Year's nails.

Yeah Right!
That was as serious as a heart attack, and a pretty massive one at that.
They do get to skate on a lot of the joys of being female, do they not?
I wish just one of them could have a baby. NO NEVER MIND. He would probably he in labor for a maximum of 2 hours, dilate abruptly, deliver effortlessly!
They really don't have it so easy either, a lot of the time. I would hate to know that every morsel of food my family ate was contingent on my efforts. What a weight to carry!
