Hi there "mom"!
It's so great to see you so caring of your daughter, enough to ask the big question.
Please, ask her to reconsider having them done.
I had been wearing acrylics on and off for 20+ years. No matter how long you have them on, 20 years or 1 day, they damage your nails!!
To put them on, they take a file, usually attached to a dremel, and rough up your nail.. the whole nail. That means that they are taking layers off, getting closer to the actual nail bed itself. Then, they put on chemicals. Not just the acrylic product itself, they actually put primer chemicals on your natural nail... what is left of it. Then comes the acrylic product. Mixed with more chemicals. Those things destroy your nails and can cause permanent damage to both nail and bed.

It is true that your nails will never be the same. The longer you wear them, the worse and more irreversible the damage. I have had a fungal growth, cuticle infections and I even got a wart on my thumb, that grew from the cuticle to the nail bed. OUCH! I know it came from the salon because my daughter got one at exactly the same time and we were using the same salon. Her's showed up on her middle finger, but did the same thing... grew from the cuticle to the nail bed, lifting the nail.
Anyone who tells you acrylics are safe is lying. Just the process of putting them on is not safe.
It's been about 9 months now for me, since I took them off for the last time. I had gone in for my fill and as the tech was filing the pain was so severe I was in tears. She offered to put something on to deaden the pain so she could continue. That's all it took and I left that day, no fill, took off my acrylics and never looked back.
Now, not everyone will have had the severe problems I did. Some will have had worse problems. Please, please, try to find some other way for your daughter to achieve beautiful nails.
For one, the product sold here is excellent. I have nails for the first time in my life. I mean nails, not little pathetic stubs. But whatever product you might choose to use, please do not choose acrylics!

I had acrylics several years ago (10 maybe?), and they were short-lived! Of course I was stupid and went to one of those cheapy places. The tech who did my nails (and not a young woman, either) started on my pinky. She CUT the cuticle on the pinky with the with dremel file, and it bled. She CUT the cuticle on the ring finger, it bled. I said, "If you think you might slice open the next finger, you better find me another tech." She didn't, but she filed so far down into my nail bed that my fingers were very painful! When I went to bed that night, my fingers just throbbed. I left them on for maybe a year. I got sick of 1. going in every week or two for fills and 2. the endless search for a good nail tech. I finally took them off and have never looked back.

I hope before she decides to do this she considers the maintenance, risk of infection and the damage to her natural nails. Oh, it's so not worth it.

Dear "Mom",

I used to to work in a school as a teaching assistant and saw young girls whose parents gave them acrylics as gifts. When girls are young, first, they don't keep their nails as clean as they should, which can lead to infection. They also use their hands in different ways than maybe we do as adults - carrying books, writing all day, etc. It's very easy to get them caught in a desk or any other trauma that is painful and causes injury or lifting. Their nails grow faster than ours do, so they need a fill at least every two weeks or they will have troubles. And their nails are also thinner than ours. I know my nails are thicker (but not stronger) as an adult. What I saw were alot of girls walking around miserable with nails that hadn't been filled in a month. Their parents didn't want to invest the money in having a tech remove them and they were afraid to do so themselves. NOT a pretty sight!

I understand the peer pressure. They all want them at this age for proms and status. If your daughter wants them for a specific event like a dance, an alternative would be to pick up a set of Sally Hansen french tip nails. My sister does that all the time. You do have to rough your nail bed a little and use nail glue, but they adhere well for almost a week. They soak off easily. Sure, there's a little damage, but nowhere near as devastating as acylics. They are also more transparent than acrylics and it is easier to watch for fungal infection. OR, maybe take her just for a regular French manicure for a treat. Her nails are probably long enough naturally to look pretty. They do a nice job with airbrushing.

Good luck!

these two ladies have said it far better than i ever could have. it will leave your daughter with ruined nail beds. her own nail beds will eventually become so thinned out from all the filing that they will lift from the finger. soaking them off in acetone is time consuming and will leave her with a lot of sensitivity issues with what's left. it is so not worth it. this stuff is what happens when "nothing" goes wrong. fungal and bacterial infections and other infectious diseases have happened when instruments have not been sterilized properly. so few salons actually take the time and care to do so. please, please, don't let her do it. she will regret it. i and so many have.

if she just wants them for one night, and she's determined, i recommend the ones with adhesive strips that you peel off and press on. no nail beds are "roughed up", which is always what starts all the damage initially. please don't get acrylics. i don't know how to say it any more clearly.

Please tell your daughter to keep her nails in their natural state and forego the acrylics. Yes, they do look pretty, but my how they damage your nails. When my husband and I went on our first cruise I decided to get acrylics. I wanted those long pretty nails. I only had them for a short period of time because it was just too costly to keep up with the fills, not to mention the fact that there is the chance you will get a fungus or infection. That is not a pretty sight. Even with the short time I had them my nails were in terrible shape when the acylics were removed. I decided then and there that this was not a good thing. I have since kept my nails in their natural state. Since I do medical transcription and am at the computer typing a lot each day I keep my nails a nice natural length, neither too short or too long. If your daughter will notice, the trend now with a lot of the models and actresses is the short, natural nails. Barbs NGF is great for maintaining beautiful natural nails. Maybe you should order the NGF kit for her.
