Subject: The white tip of my nail grows downwards

Message:
It's a problem I've had for yrs. ever since I started putting on acrylic nails. It seems that the white part of the nail at the tip that usually grows outward and long grows inwards and as a result my whole nail detaches from the base. It isn't painful though it's only painful right after I put the acrylic on the pain is like a consticting feeling on the sides. I've gone w/o putting nails on but nothing changes and also there's a papery thing that grows under my nail could I have a fungus and if so how do I cure it because it's impossible for me to wear my nails nude they're so ugly

Tallie,
i was going to go into this explanation of why you have this problem, but i have a feeling it's just not going to matter. the acrylics are destroying your own nail bed and your nails will all, eventually, completely lift from your fingers. then you will have pain. this is a natural nail forum. when you decide your done with the acrylics come on back. we don't do the "on-again-off-again thing" here. so, go ahead and waste your money on the fills trying to "correct" all the damage every 2 weeks. it's just not what we answer questions about here.

Tallie - my recommendation would be to remove the acrylics by soaking them in acetone and then visiting your doctor and/or dermatoligist. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are ill, but nails tips that grow downward is sometimes a symptom of heart, liver and/or respiratory conditions. That is where I would start if it were me.

Hi Tallie,
I know how you feel about having ugly nails and using acrylics to cover them up. I have been on that rollercoaster for more years than I want to admit. I put them on, take them off. My nails are ugly, so I put them on.
The last time I had them put back on was about 1 1/2 years ago. And I kept them on for several months and one day when I went for a fill, it was so painful I was in tears. The tech offered to put 'something' on them to deaden the pain so she could continue. That was it for me. I left the salon with only a partial fill, went home and removed the acrylics. It's taken months and months but I have been using NGF faithfully and my natural nails are looking great!
It wasn't easy, but Tallie, you're not helping the problem by keeping the acrylics. You're continuing the damage and destruction of your own nails and nail bed. They will never get better with acrylic use.
I would suggest, as debodel did, that you seek medical help with this just to rule out any serious issues that might be at hand.
But please, whatever you decide, remember that the acrylics are not helping. They are only making matters worse.
Please come back often and let us know what you find out and how you're doing!

howdy ladies,
after three years of seeing this story over and over, you can just tell when people aren't ready to give them up. these "things" can be an addiction. some folks just don't want to put the time in, it takes, to grow the real thing. quick fixes are what they're after.

Cheryl you are so right. It takes an act of congress and Gods confirmation to make people see what they are doing to themselves. If they would in fact take a few minutes to actually do some research on the products used during the acrylic fiasco, and then read some of the REAL LIFE HORROR STORIES, found even here, you would think they would come to a correct conclusion. But some of us have harder heads, so to speak. So the only thing we can do is continue to be as honest and as informative as possible and hope that in the end they can in fact recover without too much trauma to the natural nails and cuticles. Not to mention all of the wasted time, money, effort and possible medical problems that accompany the cycle of the fake nails.

Does it not stand to reason that if the problem began with the acrylics, the root could in fact BE the acrylics. You really need to rethink what you are doing to your natural nails.

Cheryl, although I am sure you have seen this more often than I, being new to NGF and this board and all, I just thought that if someone takes the time to post regarding a problem - we should provide informative answers. Afterall, what they chose to do with the information that is provided here is totally up to them. I wasn't trying to override your response by any means and I can sure seen where posting the same thing over and over can be frustrating. I just felt that if one person benefits, and it may not even be the person who is posting, the at least we can say, on some level, mission accomplished.

I have been acrylic free for almost 4 years. I guess what I am saying essentially is that we all had to start somewhere.

OOPS the Anonymous post was from me! Sorry guys!

Just another really good point on having to repeat information about the acrylics.

If everyone will notice there is a *TOPIC SEARCH* on the forum home page just below the topic listings. If one would only take a second or two to type in "acrylics" they can readily see multiple offerings of information previously posted. Just thought this would help. But obviously we wasted a lot of effort putting that feature on the forum. I am not trying to be weird but instant gratification abounds everywhere anymore.
I am only suggesting that those seeking answers, do the search and see what you come up with. If there is not enough detail already posted, then ask for someone to elaborate. That is fairly straight forward and no one will mind helping. It will save a lot of time, because sometimes I am quite frankly overwhelmed. If it were not for you guys picking up the mantel and helping, I would not even have the time to ship the orders to you. NOT A GOOD THING! So just look for some answers, if they are not there, THEN ABSOLUTELY post, and someone will respond if they have any knowledge of the issues.

i really do try to take the questions one at a time and on their own merit. i can tell when someone is just not ready to hear the truth and do the necessary steps to have healthy nails. they just want an easy way out. when people come on here and say,"i want these things off, i'm sick of it, and i want to try and have healthy nails", i will support them through every bit of it. but, when they come here and say, "it's impossible for me to wear my nails nude, they are too ugly", then it's beyond anything i can say to talk them out of them. i'd rather help the people who really want to change. your opinion matters here too. we all offer different ways of looking at these "nail issues". it's what makes it work.

Tallie - I agree with all the ladies here too about "acrylic addiction" vs health. I have nicely curved, long nail beds normally. After taking off acrylics after 3 years, they looked like a biter's nails - short, flat beds and lifting up at the ends like yours. I HAD to remove them because the pockets formed by the lifting stayed moist and I started with a fungal infection. I was squishing prescription-strength anti-fungal lotion under there. There is NO stopping it. As long as that hard nail is still on, your nails won't start sealing back to the nail bed while you watch that pocket beginning to grow by the day. The hard acrylic keeps them in a pried up position once that starts. Sure, it stings and feels like it is contracting during fills. That is products like acetone, acrylic and glue seeping under onto that tender raw skin of your nail bed. It's like pouring salt in a wound.

I'd cringe when I caught sight those pockets under flourescent lights, knowing I had to do something soon. I wasted way too much time trying fix something that could only be fixed by nature's best healer - air! So, I prepped my boyfried there would be ugliness and no more good back scratches. Didn't scare him off! Maybe it would make a good New Year's resolution for you?
