Subject: Slow Nail Grow due to Underactive Thyroid Problems
Message: I just got a full-set of acrylics because I have a underactive thyroid condition (caused by hypopituitarism condition) and my nails NEVER grow or get strong. I have always had thin, weak, snagging nails that never seem to grow. Ever since the age of 21 (I am 34 now) I have been wearing acrylics or gels because my natural nails never grew. I don't really want to get acrylics/gels, but I love having beautiful nails (not long). I read a lot of information that it takes 4-6 months for nails to grow out (this can't be true). I have tried various products (Prostrong,TIPS, NailTek, Nail Magic, Jessica, Sally Hansen, various hardeners). Nothing seems to make my nails grow. Hardeners just break my nails.
I tried NGF for 2 months but nails didn't grow that much after I took my acrylics off because they kept breaking/snagging. I used TIPS for 4 months and I didn't see any difference in my nails. I even voiced my opinion in the TIPS forum room.
I hear alot about Biotin and MSM vitamins do you recommend taking these vitamins while using NGF? Has anyone used these vitamins while applying NGF? How long did it take for you to see nail growth? Is there anybody out there with underactive thyroid problems, if so, have you had any success in growing your nails with NGF or with the Biotin and MSM vitamins? I am getting frustrated with wasting money on nail products that don't deliver. If I can't find anything to grow and strengthen my nails while suffering with underactive thyroid problem then I guess I will continue to get acrylics/gels on my nails for many more years. I brougt NGF last year but I never really used it all. I just started using it again recently. Maybe I should get a fresh order.
I tried silk wraps for a week, it seems to keeps my nails from snagging so much but didn't help when I took it off. I was thinking about getting silk wraps or fiberglass again and just use the NGF. How fast will I see growth if I apply NGF while growing out my acrylics?
Hope I didn't cofuse you all.

Message: Jackie - 2 months really isn't long enough to grow a new nail. I took my acrylics off in July and still have tips that are the old "smothered" nail. Barbara said on that other topic that you could use the NGF with your acrylics. Hey, it's Winter. Everyone's cuticles could use the extra TLC that you'd get from this product. Oh, and if you have acrylics now, you will surely notice if your nails grow faster between fills. Last year I had to be on a round of steroids and my nails probably grew twice as fast that month.
I don't know anything about thyroid conditions, but I'm sure you've probably talked to your doctor about the effects on your nails. Does your hair grow slowly too? I would certainly try the Biotin. Alot of women take it for hair and nails. My daughter took Prenatal vitamins for her nails last year and they are gorgeous now. That's another thought.

Hi Jackie!
I don't know about the thyroid problem, but I can attest to the fact that yes, it can take several months for the damaged nail to grow out. I called ProStrong customer service when I first started using and they said to allow at least 8 months for the entire nail to grow out and the nail bed heal. They said in many cases it can take 1+ years.
Of course, the rate of growth will depend entirely on the person using it. Not all products work identically on all people.
I started using NGF when I got tired of wasting my money on ProStrong. NGF is the best thing that has ever happened to my nails. I used it for 3-4 weeks before I noticed an increase in the rate of nail growth.
Hopefully others will be able to address the thryroid issue. Good Luck to you!

Message: Jackie,
I have had an underactive thyroid for ten years due to the
autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I know of at
least one other woman who posts here who also has an
underactive thyroid. My nails did grow reasonably well even with
my thyroid disease, but I'm now dealing with other health
problems and toxic medications and they were always breaking,
despite the many supplements I take including MSM (although I
haven't done the high-dose biotin except for short periods of
time).
I have read on other bulletin boards that many people rave
about the hair and nails supplements containing biotin. In fact, I
got my mom started recently on that due to her sparse hair from
overactive thyroid that turned underactive.
I'm still pretty new on the NGF and only have short tips so far,
but I am looking forward to seeing them grow and hope they will
not break off easily as they had been going prior to NGF. I will
say that the NGF is the only nail product I've ever used that
keeps my nails very hydrated all the time, even after washing my
hands or doing dishes. My skin has always been so dry (perhaps
this is another issue from my thyroid) that I am grateful to finally
have hydrated nails and hope this will provide a healthier
foundation for future nail growth.
Even with my often-short nails, I never gave in to acrylics
because I figured my body was already taxed with health
problems. I did not want to risk infections from the acrylics
which would put an even heavier burden on my already
struggling body. So personally, I think striving for naturally
healthy nails is the way to go for me.
I wish you the best because I completely understand your
frustration. I think when the body is dealing with any kind of
disease or physical stress, it rations out nutrients and growth for
the essential parts of our body, but then the non-essential parts
of our body such as nails or hair suffer. Please keep us posted
and let us know how you do!

Message: I suffer from hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). I wore acrylics until February 2002. I saw a product on HSN called Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails. I started taking this product and it made a miraculous difference in my nails, within weeks. But, my cuticles still lacked something. Over the course of the next few years - I tried many, many products, including TIPS and Prostrong - just to name a few. I saw a post one night on another bulletin board regarding the NGF. I ordered it and today, I am 37 days into the "program" if you will. I took the whole plunge and ordered the entire kit. I can tell you today that my cuticles are much improved. My nails have a glossy shine and look and feel healthy. I wish you luck in your quest for the right product for you, but I don't think you will be disappointed if you give it a try.

Message: Hi Jackie,
The Natural Nails Growth Formula can NOT and will NOT succeed UNLESS IT IS USED with some degree of consistency. It CAN and WILL succeed if it is used consistently. It has no choice but to work because of the chemistry involved. It stimulates cell activity! That is its signature function! If it is rubbed into the cuticles and on the nails, it is bound by the laws of science to do what it does. If you jump from product to product the chances of anything actually working are slim to none. And if something does work, how on earth do you determine which product worked with so much in the mix? If you purchased the product and use it sporadically, your results will not be sustained and stable. You wasted your money! to put it into its proper perspective. If you use the product, and use it consistently, until the jar is empty, your nails and cuticles have no choice but to improve. I would rather not make a sale than to have someone purchase the product, use it intermittently, and then be disappointed with the lack of results. The lack of results in these instances, is due to the lack of action. This is not a condemnation on you personally, it is just a simple statement of the facts with regards to the product and its PROPER use. I hope you understand what I am saying here without taking offence.

Message: Hi again, Jackie!
I agree with what Barb says about needing to use this or any product faithfully to make sure it's working as it should. You mentioned having used NGF for 2 months. Did you use it 2x daily during that time? For the first 30 days, I feel it's crucial. Your nails just soak up the moisture and nourishment.
I was thinking about your question regarding biotin and I recall seeing at least a few people on another board posting that they take biotin along with NGF and find that the addition of an internal nourishment has been beneficial to them. Considering your health realted issue and how it deters nail growth and healthy nails all together, I can only think it would be a good thing to do. But, not being a doctor I can't really recommend you take anything in addition to whatever it is you're taking for your thyroid problem. Perhaps it's best to check with your doctor or a pharmacist to make sure there would be no adverse reaction to taking the biotin.
I sure hope you find something that will help you!

Message: I have long-shoulder length hair that seems to grow quickly. I notice that my toe nails grow strong, long, and faster than my finger nails. This is very strange. I have hypopituitarim condition(underdeveloped pituitary) this is the reason why I have an underactive thyroid.
I took pre-natal vitamins for one month, but I didn't notice any nail or hair growth. I recently started taking taking biotion (2500mcg) and MSM (1000mg) vitamins. I hope to see some fast nail growth from this supplement. I also take a liquid vitamin.
I used NGF before, I did see some growth, but when I took my acrylics off, the nails just broke/snagged. Barabara, I don't disagree with you, I should use one product to see if it benefits my nails. I am planning to re-order anoter bottle of NGF because my first bottle is almost empty. I didn't get the NGF buffing cream before, do I need this?
For those users that have underactive thyroid condition, how long did it take your nails to grow while using NGF? How many inches of grow did you notice? Did your doctor's increase your thyroid medicine to help with nail growth?

Message: Jackie if your nails are still snagging on things and layering, splitting, and flaking from the effects of the acrylics, if they are still thin and frail, NO do not use a buffer. It takes a degree of dedication to undo the damage done by the fake nails. I think the acrylics are more at issue than your medical condition. The Natural Nails Growth Formula is DESIGNED to stimulate the cell activity, meaning, even after you stop rubbing in the formula, it is in fact still working. It works if you use it. You can not UNDO acrylic damage. You can only give your nails the best chance to recover FROM those effects. By stimulating the cells the growth rate increases and the damaged nails will be at issue for a shorter span of time because they will grow out faster. They will in fact he hydrated and lessen the possibility of the layering and flaking effects of the bonding agents used with the acrylics. You have to wrap your mind around the fact that the acrylic are DEATH on natural nails. Regardless of health issues, they will destroy your natural nails and you run the risk of permanently damaging your nails and nail beds. That will give you an other health issue to concern yourself with. And that is the last thing you need. Those things should be outlawed entirely due to the risks involved. If you do order the Growth Formula, use it as instructed, and don't give in to a sudden urge to have that instant gratification by going back to the fakes. We will all be here to cheer on your progress. If you have questions, regardless of the topic of conversation, we will be more than willing to help out. So just jump in here when ever you need support, or just to "chat".
