Subject: Growing a new nail
Message: You probably get these posts all the time, so I will make it brief. Three weeks ago I was cleaing sharp stainless steel at work and a pointy edge cut under my finger nail. Blood poured out, I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and wrapped it with a band-aid. Two weeks later I took the loose nail off (kind of pulled it) and went to a doctor. He prescribed Centany, a antibiotic cleanser. I showed him yellow build up on the lower left hand corner and he said it was just new tissue forming. Is that true? And I feel my "heartbeat" in the nail, like constant throbbing. How long does that take to subside, and will a new thumbnail form in a few months? Thank you for all of your help.

Message: Hi Joe,
My hubby lowered a press on his nail at work and it took a couple weeks but it came off. I had him wrap it so it wouldn't snag. He didn't have the yellowish buildup you're talking about, so I can't help with that, but it did take a few, 4-5 I think, months before the new nail was in.
I would suggest you go to a doctor, but you already did that. Maybe it's just normal body fluids? Is it red and puffy in that area?
The throbbing you're feeling sounds like what my hubby went through. Very uncomfortable! :(
Good luck, I hope someone here can help you out.

Message: OUCH, Joe! I think you've done just about everything you can do at this point. I think I know the sort of bump you are referring to. Is it near your cuticle? When you sustain trauma to your nail bed, even though it might be in another area of the nail, you can get inflammation elsewhere too. That's what some of us with healing acrylic damage have gone through as well - "the humps and bumps" as the nail is healing and growing out.
If your cuticle area or the area next to your nail is at all red or puffy as well, though, maybe you should put some antibiotic ointment on it a few times daily. Alot of the ointments also have a little numbing agent in them. And if that throbbing doesn't get better or you swell again, maybe your doc would want to prescribe oral antibiotics.
Good luck to you!

Message: Joe, Sorry for your pain. You can use a Batadine wash to keep it bacteria free without the cost of a perscription cleanser. Hydrogen peroxide is of great benefit. Once it is washed and dried well, add a thin coat of Neosporin Plus. It will throb for a whild. Try to keep the injusy above the heart. That will help relieve the pounding pressure. Let us hear how it goes.

Message: Joe,
i'm a little concerned about the yellow build-up. without seeing it, that sounds like pus. two weeks into this, there shouldn't be throbbing. throbbing that happens at the beginning of an injury is the affected parts way of saying "ouch" i didn't like that. throbbing 2 weeks later is inflammation. you might need an oral antibiotic. if this all continues or gets worse over the course of the next day, i would go back to the doctor, or at least talk to their nurse about it.

Message: Coincidentally, the throbbing has subsided for the most part. I still feel it, but not as bad (if that makes sense). The yellow build up doesn't appear to look like puss or an infection. My doctor agreed too, but it was some random doctor at a clinic so how trustful can I be of him. His bedside manners were horrible and the doc seemed too preoccupied with leaving. Sorry, back to the subject....
The centany has been good for me through the first day. Maybe if I keep going along with that the throbbing will stop. As of oral antibiotics, what types are avaliable? Any other ideas as I head into phase two of this fingernail insanity?
This site has definately been bookmarked, thanks for the help.

Message: Joe, the yellow build up is probably just some serous discharge, which is the clear yellow fluid that sometimes replaces the blood after the bleeding stops. There are tons of different antibiotics, and if you have no allergies, then it is up to the preference of the doctor.
