I have developed an allergy to acrylic nails. I have been told that you can tell me how to remove the acrylic nails.

Lynnie,
That is the first question I asked her when I called her a little while ago. She is not. Hers is allergic reaction, not fungal or bacterial. I wish I knew where Cheryl is at, no body was supposed to unshackle her this afternoon! LOL

Barbara - if it allergic and severe, she should pop some Benadryl or any med like Zyrtec she might have on hand for hives. Topical hydrocortisone isn't a bad idea either, till she can get to a tech or doctor. Did she just have them put on or is it out of the blue? Sometimes the body reacts later after it decides it doesn't like a substance.

I have had them on and off for the past 10 years. I had to have them removed because of the new dress code at work a couple of years ago. (I'm a nurse at a hospital.)Then about a year ago, they changed the dress code again, so I had them put back on. I have trouble growing nice nails on my own.

Lorraine, you need acetone remover to melt them off. get a glass bowl, pour some in, set the glass bowl over into a bowl of very warm water,it can be plastic, to help keep the acetone from freezing your fingers. it's not, but it feels like it. do one nail at a time. as soon as you remove the nail from the acetone it will immediately start hardening, so you have to work fast and try and keep the nail in as long as possible. the longer you soak, the more the acrylic will melt. take an orange stick, one of those cuticle pushing sticks and just gently scrape the acrylic away from the your finger. this takes a while to do, so be patient. you don't have to do all at once. please don't be tempted to "pop" them off. you will remove many layers of your own nail. although acetone is not the nicest stuff in the world, stripping layers of your own nail bed off under the acrylic is worse. just take it one at a time and re-warm the warm water the acetone is in. i did this, as have many women, on their own. a lot of "salon's" just pop them right off with a plastic tip. what's left is an injured nail bed. the sooner you do this, the less chance of developing blisters and iritation from the allergic reaction. when you finish, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize and please think about growing your own nails. there is nothing worth putting yourself through all this for. any questions, just ask. i'm never too far away-especially when there's 2 feet of snow on the ground!!!

Oh good, you are a nurse, so you'll know what meds to use. Once I had the cuticle of a nail get puffy and itch right after a fill, definitely an allergic reaction. I remember how fierce that itch was. And that morphed later into a bacterial and fungal infection. I'm sure it is hard to grow natural nails in your profession. Lots of gloves and handwashing.

Hurrah! She's here! Imagine that, taking time out for Christmas. Oh my, TWO FEET of snow!

Lorraine - that's an evening of work, but so worth it. I echo resisting taking them off any way but that, especially peeling or chipping. If your nails are little rough or there's a teensy bit of glue or leftover product a LIGHT buffing won't hurt. Try rubbing olive oil into your nails to moisturize. Like Cheryl said, LOTS of moisture.

Moi - I was really alarmed by that one too and hope she comes here. I learned the hard way that you can't beat fungus with the acrylics smothering them. Air is the key!
