I have one on my index finger. I just saw my doctor yesterday for something unrelated and I asked him about it. He's sending me to a dermatologist....said that it's highly UNLIKELY, but it can indicate melanoma and it's best to be thorough. I'd have it checked out if I were you. I am.

Ok, don't go having heart attacks! Melanoma is only one cause of these things!
Sounds weird, but you can have a freckle or mole form in the root (matrix) of your nail at any age. It's not that uncommon.
Another cause can be a tiny blood vessel could have been just up under the nail plate and reached the underside of the nail and as the nail grew out the vessel popped and now blood is being "drug" over the nail bed. Not a big deal either, and will soon correct itself.

I got these once when I gave birth to my daughter. I had gripped my hands so tight on the handles of the labor table that it caused the blood vessles to break. Like "Carol in GA " explaination describes.
Don't worry... if this is what you have...In time these will go away.

Betty, you got me tickled on that one! I know how that one feels!
But you know, that reminded me... some people get a dark line on their belly's when they are pregnant and if I remember correctly, it can happen with fingers too--but mainly with people with an "ethnic" background, Black, Hispanic, Hawian, Oriental, etc...

I HAD JUST HEARD ABOUT THE BLACK LINE ON THE RADIO FRIDAY (PAUL HARVY), I LOOKED AT MY HAND AND OUT OF THE BULE ON MY RIGHT PINKIE THERE IT WAS, I NEVER NOTICED IT UNTILL THEN AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS AN INK LINE FROM THE PEN IN MY POCKET, I WASHED AND EVEN FILED IT AND IT WAS STILL THERE, I AM GOING TO SEE MY DR. ASAP AND WHEN I GET MORE DETAILS I WILL POST THEM.

I also have a light black line in the center of my left thumb and I am pregnant. I have a line on my stomach as well, which is normal according to my doctor. I am caucasion with light olive skin... Perhaps it is hormone related.

my daughter is 14 and has a vertical brown line in her ring finger - she showed it to me in July and I really didn't think much about it - I read the Sunday paper and saw an article on Melanoma under the fingernail - I took her to the derm. Tues. and she thinks it is a nail mole in the matrix - she wants to have a biopsy to be 100% sure though - we will go to hand surgeon as soon as the dr. makes an appt. ----any info would be appreciated - we are caucasion

nail mole, also known as a condition called melanonychia. it happens a lot more to dark skinned individuals, but also happens to light skinned also, a lot more than you think. also seems to happen to pregnant women also, which kind of makes me believe it might be hormonally driven. smart, safe decision to have it checked out for your own peace of mind. let us know the result of the biopsy. my bet is on the nail mole diagnosis.
