Subject: Heart Attack procedures for women

Message:
This is a very serious topic, but since it was sent to me by my best friend, I wanted to post it for all of you. May none of us ever experience any of this, by the grace of God.

HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE": (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!)

Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the
left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never
have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and
intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart
attack while they are asleep do not wake up. The pain in the jaw happened
to me and woke me from a sound sleep. I was one of the fortunate ones.
Trust me when I tell you it's pain unlike anything you've ever experienced
before. Given a choice between natural child birth and a heart attack,
pain-wise; it's much easier to have a baby.

Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could
survived ...

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people,
you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this ... It could
save your life!!

Let's say it's 6:15pm and you're driving home (alone of course), after an
unusually hard day on the job. You're tired, upset and frustrated.
Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to
radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five
miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if
you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the
guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

"HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE":

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help,
the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint,
has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these
victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A
deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep
and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A
breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up
until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally
again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements
squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure
on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack
victims can get to a hospital.

Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their
lives!! "

Karen,

I write healthcare articles and other healthcare-related work for hospitals across the country, so I subscribe to numerous medical journals. I had received this email from several friends and it sounds logical to me. But I did read one comment in a renowned medical journal that the procedure described above is more folklore or myth than based in reality. So I have no idea whether it would work or not. On the other hand, if one is alone and has no alternatives, perhaps it could make a difference!

I have written several articles on heart attack symptoms in women. These symptoms are often far more subtle than the crushing chest pain or left arm pain that men experience. Yes, women can experience those symptoms, but more common are symptoms such as fatigue, indigestion or more flu-like symptoms. This is one reason why women are often not taken seriously when being considered as heart attack patients.

Two Thanksgivings ago, my dad and I rushed my mom to the ER because she suddenly got terrible neck and upper back pain, fatigue and queasiness. Fortunately, it did not turn out to be a heart attack, but I knew that these could be heart attack symptoms in a woman, particularly when they came on so suddenly. So it is always better to err on the side of caution, even if a doctor looks at us with disbelief.

Jill, thank you for your clarification. I only received this today, and I have heard on news programs that women's symptoms are not the same as men's, and when I received this, I thought I had to share it with the ladies here. I know nothing about this, but it's just that this verified what the news shows have said. However, this is your area of expertise and I defer to you. I always respect people who have knowledge in an area, and can tell us all the inside information.

Thank you so much for giving us more detail, and I don't know if it works either, but at least they can be armed somewhat with this (just an idea) and what you have told them (fact). I admire your knowledge.

Thanks for spreading the knowledge, Ladies! Heck, I'd try the cough if I were stuck in the car, for sure. If I were home, I'd probably pop a hypertensive I take regularly anyway. I can't take aspirin, but that's another quickie that saves lives till people get to the hospital because it thins the blood.

Jill! "fatigue, indigestion or more flu-like symptoms". That's my daily status quo somedays! ;-) No wonder the doctors and even we don't take us seriously.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to look into it a little deeper, just for the sake of being aware. Here's more that I only learned a few months back.

My 76 year old mom has a standing appt with her doc, every 3 mos. Two years ago the doctor saw, in her vitals, that at some point between appts she'd had a heart attack; obviously a mild one but still... So, he prescribed the nitro pen and told her to carry it at all times, and be very aware of her symptoms if she had another attack.

Then, last March, the wind blew her down; she was hospitalized for 12 weeks. I was with her when the RN was doing her admission into the rehab unit. Mom mentioned the nitro, in response to the query of "what meds?". The nurse asked her to repeat the instructions on how to use it. Mom had NO IDEA!! And it is quite complicated...I don't recall all of it but there's a sequence of placing some under your toungue, holding it there, monitoring your pulse, deciding if you should take another dose, and so on.

I was amazed that her family doc had let her go without this instruction. If you don't know how to use the stuff you may as well not even have it with you.

These guys say the article is false.

SNIP . . . ". . . the advice they were forwarding could potentially be harmful to someone undergoing a heart attack, but that is indeed the case.

If you knew exactly what you were doing, this procedure it might help save your life. If, however, you were to attempt cough CPR at the wrong time (because you misjudged the kind of cardiac event being experienced) or went about it in the wrong way, it could make matters worse. . . . "

Still ladies, we need to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us, and be prepared to get help or take action. :^ )

The following is a copy and paste from the Mayo Clinic:

Heart attack symptoms in women

Women may experience all, none, many or a few of these common symptoms of a heart attack. For women, as for men, the most common symptom of a heart attack is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. But women are more likely than men to also have signs and symptoms unrelated to chest pain, such as:

* Neck, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort
* Shortness of breath
* Nausea or vomiting
* Sweating
* Lightheadedness or dizziness
* Unusual or unexplained fatigue

This is the link directly to the page presented by the Mayo Clinic. Hope this will help too.

Before I had my heart surgery for a severely irregular rythmn, I would go into fibrillation and one of the first things they would try to get me to do is to cough. Something about it interupting the irregular electrical impulses. But that won't work for everything so please be careful out there!
