Subject: Moi and her Parrot
Message: Moi,
I just read the post about your poor parrot and his battle with
liver disease (I can relate, I was told I might need a liver
transplant from the Lyme treatment - much of my hair fell out,
but my nails broke, didn't grow). But in pain there is always
humor. When I read how you were going to rub NGF on his beak,
so many visuals whirled through my mind. First of all, we might
have to rename it Beak Growth Formula. There will be a huge
new market among vets and PetsMart. And best of all, your
darling parrot (if he can speak) can be the spokescritter in
Barbara's TV commercial! And then you will be wealthy because
spokescritters make a lot of money (just ask Morris the Cat!)
Is your vet open to using herbs or anything? I've used various
liver herbs, with milk thistle being considered the most
protective of the liver. But that's on humans - can't speak for our
avian friends.

Message: Moi, I'm sorry about your Parrot being sick, but Jill's posting is so descriptive, and yes, I can see your Parrot getting better and being happier with BGF, which would be Beak Growth Formula. Yes, he would be more popular than Morris the cat because he would be able to speak his own lines!!
I know you pet is ill, and I hope he gets better, and I hope Jill, you get better too. It is good to laugh at things though. If we can't laugh, I think we'd all be in tougher shape.
Good night ladies, and I'm headed off to bed. Have a good night and I'll talk with you all tomorrow!

Message: This is just Parrot related, and not about Moi's pet, but do any of you remember seeing The Pink Panther Movies, and Peter Sellers being in a costume, as a Pirate, and having the inflatible Parrot on his shoulder, and it kept losing air and he had to keep pumping it up. Moi, this isn't funny about your Parrot, but all I can think of is that Parrot on Peter Sellers' shoulder being pumped up everytime it started to deflate! I hope this gives you something to laugh at.

Message: OMG that's funny stuff you guys!
We have had her for 21 years, she is 33 years old.
She's actually still young for a parrot. She isn't acting sick at all yet. Her new feathers came in nice and thick and bright and beautiful. So far, the only symptom is the nail and beak problem. I had no idea she was sick. I was playing with her one day a year or so ago and she turned her head to the side and I thought, HOLY COW, her beak was very very long and curved under. I called the vet to get her beak trimmed. When I described to the vet how it had grown suddenly, she told me what she suspected and did the blood work. Sure enough, came back just what she said.
We give her something called Enulose. In parrots, it's supposed to aid the liver function. Like I said, it really effects the beak and nails, making them grow very fast and be very brittle. When we use the dremel on her, layers of the beak flake away. It just looks yukky (yukky being a technical term for dry.) I don't really know if the NGF will actually seal in the moisture, but it sure makes it look better!
She's an absolute doll! So much fun.

Message: Moi,
I am so glad that your parrot is not suffering. Wow, and she's 33
and such a long-time member of your family. That is so
wonderful. I hope she will have a very long and healthy life.
As funny as it sounds to put NGF on her beak, I hope it works -
it makes sense to me that the hydrating formula would be
helpful. You will have to give us updates. I just love hearing
stories about beloved animals. And I still vote for her as our
spokesparrot!

Message: I had a parrot I had to rehome because, when I got my pups, I couldn't let him out of the cage as much and he was getting nasty. He has a great house now where he has the run of the place! They ARE characters, though, aren't they? I know 33 is young in parrot years. I used to worry I would have to name a guardian for my Pepper if anything happened to me. He's surely going to outlive me. He is a Quaker, a little guy. What do you have?
I think your idea is excellent. After all nails and beaks are just keratin, like ours are. Plus, you know we spare NO expense when it comes to our pets! I can't wait to see if it helps. Poor little guys even have to sleep on their feet. Good luck!

Message: Hi, LOL
Looks like I'm talking to myself... okay, who posted that??
It's a Blue Front Amazon. A rather 'typical' parrot as far as breeds go. I had always wanted an African Grey. We got Cory from a pet store owner who got her from the original owner because the original owner was tired of caring for her. Dana, the pet store owner, told me when the owner brought Cory in, the cage was so small cory had to hunch over and feces were piled all the way up to the perch. We also found out that the owners kids used to jab at her with sticks. Needless to say that made training her tough because one of the easiest ways to teach them to get on your hand is to slowly and gently get them to step up on a stick while you're holding it (like a perch size stick). We do not keep her in a cage. She has a play stand that she stays on most of the time until she decides she wants to come see us. Then, just jumps off the stand and waddles around the house until she finds us. We can hear her coming because she makes a clucking/warbbling noise. She sits with me at the computer some days, sits on my bed somedays. She's an angel.
One of the funniest things in the world is to watch her and my grandson stare at each other. And then, when he finds a feather on the ground he brings it to me and wants me to put it back on Cory. LOL
Cory loves to eat baked potatoes, grapes, chicken (kinda cannibalistic, don't you think?) and french fries. With the fries she uses her beak to slit open the fry then scoops out the potato part inside. She does the same thing with the grapes. Slits open the skin and scoops out the insides. I just love her! LOL

Message: That is so funny Moi! I guess Cory is pretty much the center of attraction there on most days.
My Dad had two parakeets when I was a child. He had them about 4 years before he even gave them their names.
One of them was a little chatter box. He would copy almost any spoken word instantly. The other on would just sit and listen to the first one for a few days, testing the new work. Then out of the blue she would squawk it out, LOUD and CLEAR!
So my Dad named the pair Pete and Re-Pete!

Message: That was me!!! Sheesh, I'm so used to using boards where you login and can forget who are.
I love parrot stories. It takes an owner to realize how much character they have! Amazon's are gorgeous and less tempermental, I believe, than Grey's. My bird used to do that with grapes too. Must be they don't like the skin? Mine liked fries too. Actually, he would eat just about everything. He LOVED pizza, popcorn and spaghetti the best, though.
See, it's nice you can give him the run of the house and I'm glad you rescued him. It was bothering too much that I couldn't let my guy out. One of my pups would have gotten him for sure. Sometimes it's hard to do what's right for a pet, but that's what ownership is about, huh?

Message: i've thought so many times how great it would be to own a beautiful bird, care for it, teach it and then i come to my senses and realize that my cats would turn it into a nervous wreck-especially the 3-legged one!! to own an animal for that long is just an awesome experience i'm sure.

Message: Well, I might get jumped on for this, but here's a story for you.
We also had taken in a cat that found us on Thanksgiving night 14 years ago. A sweet little kitty. We found her cuddled up in our laundry basket on the warm clothes dryer in the garage.
We did all we could to keep them apart, the bird and the kitty. But that kitty was bound and determined to have at Cory. At the time Cory was in a very big cage to keep her safe. I learned from our vet and from doing research, that just a single cat scratch can kill a bird. It's an allergic reaction they have and it's a painful death from what I understand. So anyway, one day after chasing the kitty (now about 6 months old) away from Cory, I took Suzie (kitty) over to the cage and stuck just the end of her tail in and Cory gave her a good nip... just a warning. It didn't break the skin but it hurt. Hurt enough that Suzie NEVER went near Cory again. My other option was to give Suzie away, which I didn't want to do either. I still believe I did the right thing, and I'm very sorry if any of you are offended by this.
