Subject: outgrowth after acrylics

Message:
Hi guys! I have a question for those of you who have worn acrylics for a while. I took my acrylics off myself about three weeks ago. I know thats a bad idea...but anyway I did it. I had just had enough! I have been using the NGF for about two weeks and it is helping a lot. But I am really discouraged. My nails are so weak that they peeled down into the quick. Any free edges that are SLOWLY growing seem to turn up (not natural growth) and they just break! URGH!!! Does anyone know if my nails will have to TOTALLY replace themselves (beyond where the drill has destroyed the nails), before I can have ANY decent outgrowth?? I am SO ASHAMED of how my poor NUBS look for the holidays! I know I am whining....I need some encouragment. Any ideas from those of you who have made it past acrylics? Is there HOPE?????

Hi Jane, and welcome to the NGF forum! I'm not an expert on removal of acrylics, but I have had TERRIBLE nails all of my life until I started with the NGF. I have not had a nail break or split or chip in nearly 7 weeks, and my nails are all one length at the same time.

I know acrylics cause damage to your natural nails, and it didn't happen overnight, so it will take some time to repair them. Keep working with the NGF and please don't give up.

I'm sure the Barbara and acrylic ladies will give you better advice than I can, but this is from someone who never had nice nails, except when I had acrylic nails, and they ruined my natural nails. I wish I had been able to use NGF back all those years ago!

Good luck, and keep with the NGF.

Hi Jane!
You're not whining, you're just suffering the postacrylic blues that so many of us do!

I'm afraid to say that it will take time. To be honest, it wasn't just the nail itself that got damaged. It also does bad things to your cuticles and the nail bed itself. I have been 7 months acrylic free and my nails look sooo much better, but I still get weird ridges growing out. They are diminishing, so I know with time they will continue to improve.

Try to be patient and work on those cuticles and filing your nails to make them look less jagged and more even. Keep using the product religiously and you'll see an increase in the rate of nail growth as well. It was about week 3-4 before I looked down and thought "wow, where did those come from?" (talking about my nails) ::: blushing :::

I used my NGF morning and night and also just rubbed some in during the day for the first month.
You feel free to come here ANYTIME and ask questions or just say hi. Actually, it's required that you come say hi and chat with us. I just made that rule. ;)

Hope that helped!

Hi Jane,
Stick with it...I was right there where you are just 3 weeks ago. I've been doing NGF now for 4 weeks, I start week five on Monday. Just like you, I had soaked off my acrylics myself, which isn't a bad thing as long as you soaked them in acetone, and you didn't just rip them off like a lot of people. I soaked mine off, and ordered NGF about 3 weeks later.

My nails are still short. However, they are much stronger, so stick with it. My first couple of weeks I still had a lot of peeling. But now, I find that my nails are strong again. You can see more about what I said about the stregnth in another post that I wrote earlier today.

One other thing that I do that may help you and other ladies; I rub the base of my nails as well as the tips, obviously we are rubbing the entire surface of the nail, but I like to concentrate product all around the tip of the nail, at the top also--does that make sense? Really concentrate on the portion of your nail that is still acrylic damage, if you have long nail beds like I do, there is a lot of surface area, if not, this may not be beneficial to you. I feel like that is helping the tips to stay moisturized so that they get stronger. And they have. The bottom line is please, please, please don't give up. HTH -Joy

Hi ladies. Jane, since I never wore the acrylics or any other topical treatment, I am not the expert with this particular topic. Our Cheryl is the on that could best respond to this question. Hopefully she's on her computer right now responding and will beat me to the punch!
Any who?!?!?! From what I gather, that will take quite some time to repair. Do a topic search for recovery after acrylics, or acrylic damage from our Forum Home Page. There are several really intense informational pages about the topic. Let us know if you find that info.

Hi Jane! Welcome! I was where you are midsummer and I'm anxiously awaiting my NGF in the mail. In the meantime I had tried another product, which helped a bit, but now find it way too drying.

I've read that it takes a fingernail about 6 months to grow out completely and a thumb is closer to a year! Right now you are growing the portion of your nails, the tips, that has been subjected to the most trauma from repeated fills. You probably even have a couple ridges where you can see previous fill lines. So it is to be expected your tips are snaggy, thin and fragile. You won't have to wait for a full new nail to see improvement to the point where your edges remain smooth, but in all honesty, I don't think you can grow a real healthy new nail till your beds are all new. Lucky for you you found the NGF now.

If you are breaking your edges off to the point where you can't stand it, maybe you could put a coat of polish to harden up those edges and camoulflage a little. I was that way at times, couldn't stand looking at them! Just don't polish right up to the cuticle so you get the benefits of applying your cream to the new matrix growth.

Hang in there!!!

Jane - that was me up there, the Anonymous post. Sorry! While I'm here, I'll add that your edges curl up for now because your nail is still thinking it has to pull away from the bed to accommodate the hard product. It has been trained by the acryllics to do that. I ended up with lifting on a few nails from that and thus why I removed them to avoid an infection. They do reshape to your former contour in a couple months.

There's never a good time to remove the fakes, holidays or no, it seems! I had to take mine off just a couple months after meeting my boyfriend. We were still "new" and in that stage where you think you have to look perfect. I told him I had to remove the nails and asked him if he'd still let me touch him afterwards. No complaints! In fact, he's a bit safer. ;-)

sorry all, i was at "the irish tenors" concert this evening at the college here, so i am just filled up with christmas music at the moment!
Jane, i was exactly where you are now, 2+ years ago. as long as you soaked them off then there's no harm in doing it yourself. i saw nothing for a month. acrylics damage your nails that badly. i really can't add anything else these ladies haven't said already. they just don't recover overnight and 3 weeks, to them, is overnight. it's just going to take time and perseverence and patience. we all have done it in one form or another, but it is so worth it when they do start to recover and grow and become healthy again. you're just going to have to go on blind faith here and believe us. they will get better. keep using the formula. it will happen.
