Subject: Wonderstone File
Message: Hi ladies,
I just received an email from a customer needing a replacement file. Hers dropped off the table and shattered. So let me say this about that "last file you will ever need to purchase!"
You gotta NOT throw it at anyone, don't drop it from great heights, don't use it as a weapon. LOL!
Be careful it WILL shatter on you. If you have had this problem please let me know!

Message: Okay - don't panic - I haven't broken my file. I just don't think I have gotten the hang of using it. HELP!! I have only filed a couple of times. I don't like square shaped nail and not rounded either - something slightly in between, does that make sense. A day or two after I file, I seem to get "cracks" on the sides of my nails. What the heck am i doing wrong????

Message: Deb,
You are not doing any thing wrong. And this file does take some getting used to... It isn't sleek and thin like an emery board, so you can't just slide it under the corners and go for it. That is so that you don't slide it under the corners and go for it!
It takes longer to achieve the desired results because it doesn't just shred the nails apart. It gently actually grinds the nails down. Just use short back and forth strokes following the contours of the finger. I know what you mean about the not square not oval thing! I do understand what you're saying. Just kind of let the shape of the finger tip be your guide or follow the couture at the base of the nails. Each is totally unique so just let your own body guide the way. If this doesn't work due to the nails being too short, just sort of "graze" the surface of the nails from the top edge toward the underside of the fingertip. Now I have to ask, does that make sense to you? It really is difficult, at best, to describe what I wish I could just show you. ...Here watch this for a second...!LOL
Did you see that motion? That's what I'm talking about!
I know this is a bit difficult to comprehend, but once your nails grow out a bit and you keep using the file, you will get better at handeling it, and it will become a much simpler process.
Hope some of this helps!

Message: Deb, although I haven't used Barb's file yet, I used to get cracks on the sides of my nails because I was too rough with the emery board. I would suggest that you file the sides of your nails very, very gently in one direction. Some manicurists say that you don't have to file the sides or "corners" of your nails at all, but I like the look of them being filed at the sides, you just have to be gentle. I've been filing mine with the regular old nail file that I have at home, until I get Barb's; as long as I am gentle, I haven't had any cracks since they have started growing back stronger last week.
It sounds like maybe some of the ladies are a little bit heavy handed with the wonderstone file, so I will apply very little presure and use short stokes when I get mine.
Hope that makes sense. Any of you guys that already have the file can jump in here...

Message: i find that keeping it damp is everything. i just keep a cup of water beside me when i'm doing it to dunk it into. i've stopped filing the sides of mine completely. i found it just made my whole nail weaker in the long run.

Ahhhhhhh, that's what it looks like...LOL Thanks for the "visual" - it helped.
joy - I think that's it - I might just be too agressive - you know, not being used to having a file that works and all.
cheryl - I also dip. My husband actually look at me like "what the heck is she dipping the file in".
Thanks for the tips ladies. I only file once a week, or less - but I just knew I was doing something wrong.

Message: I'll give you a visual -
I have a parrot who has a liver disease. I guess her 'breed' tends to get it. I don't know how long she has to live but as long as her quality of life is good I will do what I can to make her comfy. Part of this disease is that her beak and nails grow very very fast and are very brittle. About 1x monthly we have to use a dremel on her beak and cut her toenails. This last time we dremeled, a lot of chips came off. I'm going to try rubbing just a little of the NGF on the outside of her beak and I'm going to try using the file to smooth and seal those areas so they don't continue to peel. Already asked the vet and after a long pause and some stiffled snickers, I was told to go for it. Does this mean I'm becoming.... strange? ;)
