Subject: Wheelchair Fund
Message: We have some positive news to report. There is a very good possibility that Moi will be able to get a chair soon, and Monday she will be checking to see if it is possible to purchase the one she already has.
From my own personal knowledge, because my brother was confined to a wheelchair for the last 3 years of his life, what the companies that sell wheelchairs charge insurance companies, HMOs and other health providers is double or triple what it costs if you were to walk in off the street and buy one on your own. However, that is how business is done, and the reported cost of Moi's chair being $1700, billed to the insurance company is completely true. The last year of my brother's life, he needed an electric chair because his hands had closed so much, he could only use his thumbs and his hands were tightly closed into fists, and he was unable to turn the wheels on his manual wheelchair. His insurance carrier denied the amount for the electric chair and he had to fight with them, and finally his doctor had to write a letter telling the carrier that he was in danger if there was ever a fire in his home, and he were home alone, he wouldn't be able to get himself out of the house. His carrier paid thousands of dollars for the electric chair, and that's because an insurance company was paying the bill.
I had to get a leg brace for a torn MCL in my right leg, and my insurance company paid all but 20% of the cost of the brace and it was over $1500, and I can't wear it because the velcro keeps expanding when I flex my leg, and the brace slips down my leg constantly. Believe me, it was not worth what I had to pay, let alone what was charged to my HMO.
Since we have to pay insurance premiums, we never realize how much health care items cost. If you have ever been hospitalized and received the itemized bill, you know that $2.00 or $3.00 for an aspirin is what is charged, when you can buy a bottle in the drugstore for that much. We pay the premiums that these companies require of us to have coverage, and when it comes time to put in a claim, they deny coverage, but continue to take your premiums. It is not fair, but that is how they work, and unless something drastic happens, it will continue to be business as usual. If you are paying premiums to a carrier, why should you even think about paying for a medical expense, such as a wheelchair, with your own money, or even checking out the cost of one.
So for the doubters that were on the QBBs, about the cost of this wheelchair for Moi, the price that was quoted that we would have liked to raise, was the price that Moi was given if she were even permitted to buy the chair from the HMO. Unfortunately, because of liability issues, the HMO won't even sell it to her, even though it's been in her possession this entire time.
You ladies on this board have been so nice and generous to her and to all of us with your caring and concern and compassion, and sharing everything together. I feel that we have become friends and a kind of family, and I can't tell you all how much I missed you all when my computer was down.
I hope, if the opportunity presents itself to you at anytime, on the QBBs, to let people know that this was never a scam by anyone concerning this sincere endeavor to help our friend, and that this kind generous Moi, needs this to get around. Please remind those doubters that life is short, and maybe sometime they will need something from someone, and kindness goes a long way toward having it returned to them. I realize there are many people who have tried to scam things from innocent people, but an entire group of intelligent, generous ladies such as you all are, and who know Moi for the lovely person she is, would not all try to put something over on others, and that this was a real endeavor to help a generous, lovely lady, who is a great Mom, and cares so much about others, and would be one of the first people to help someone else.
Thank you, and thank you for all you do for me and for all of the ladies on this forum. Barbara, as our Guru, and all of you ladies are really wonderful friends, and exceptional women.

Message: Thank you, Karen!
I really can't add anything more about the wheelchair itself right now, hopefully on Monday I will have more to report.
But, as I have said over and over and over, the people on this board are just amazing.
Thank you, from the very bottom of my heart.

Message: joy, you have done so much, just by being here, and contributing all you contribute. You are kind and thoughtful and caring, and you come here and post positive posts with us and make us smile and happy. You are one of the many ladies who make this such a special place to be, and we all know that we can count on one another! This is so much more than just a bulletin board forum, and we are so lucky that Barbara gives us this place to come and be with our friends. We all seem to work together and will pray, and help each other, and laugh and cry, and make sure we are all safe. That's a great contribution to one another.
