Subject: Green & Black Nails after fakes
Message: I just removed home applied false nails and was surprised to find that 5 out of 10 nails have some kind of green or black discoloration on the nail itself. I buffed them and some of it came off but not much. What the heck have I done?? The nails don't hurt, just look really ugly. Thanks for any ideas of what caused it or what I can do now!

Message: Elizabeth,
The green and black coloring you are describing is called nail mold. It's not caused by a fungus, but by bacteria. It can happen when the artificial nails are not properly glued down tight during application or when they become loose and are reglued without proper cleaning with rubbing alcohol. You need to keep the artificial nails and all topical treatments off until the green is completely gone. Don't try to file or buff the stains off because you'll only make your nails thinner. It will have to grow off. I would recommend that you not wear fakes anymore because you will destroy your own nails and the nail beds underneath.

Message: Thanks so much Jessica~really had me worried! They really look disgusting and odd. Can I at least paint the nails so they don't look so bad? No more false nails for me!

Message: Elizabeth,
i wouldn't paint them with anything other than a good cuticle oil. putting polish on top will just "seal" in the discoloration. they need less chemicals on them right now and some TLC. they will recover, but the discloration is imbedded in the pourous nail bed and will have to grow out. they will recover.
