Subject: Split nail
Message: Barbara, several times, I have had a broken, split nail way down into the nail bed, and if it rips off, it will be really painful. I don't have one now, but I was taught a way to fix it so it didn't tear further, and could maybe grow out a little and I wanted to ask you about it.
If it is down into your nail bed, take a teabag, and cut it into a piece that would wrap around the tear. Put on a coat of clear polish, wrap the strip of teabag around the tear, tuck the strip as close to the bottom side of the nail as you can and then just put another coat of clear on the area of the teabag? If this happens, should anyone try this, or just cut the nail so that it doesn't catch and tear? It does work, and I only used it on the sides, never on an entire nail to hold the tip on, and that was my own natural tip.

Message: Karen, this sounds like a procedure that I used to do with the silk wrap stuff and nail glue that you can get from the beauty supply or drug store. I used to do it often, before I started getting acrylics. It would help me to grow my nail out for a couple of weeks, and then I would just trim the the "break" off after it had grown out enough.

Message: Karen I don't have first hand knowledge here with this issue or remedy. One thing I do know, if you are using any top coat or glue to bond the materials to the nails surface, you will want to use the NGF often to keep the cuticles hydrated during this process. And as soon as you can get the remedy off of the surface of the nail, do so, and then re-hydrate the full area.
If that works then I say excellent....GO FOR IT. I just generally cut, well actually file, back the effected nails and increase the usage of the formula on that nail in a little game of catch up!
But I am not meticulous enough to do those remedies. I am basically LAAAAAZY about such things. I just want the path of least resistance. LOL

Message: joy and Barbara, I only did it when there was a really low breakage that would have hurt it I removed it and couldn't file it, but I haven't had that in so long, and I'm not experiencing that now. But It is similar to a wrap, but it's just with clear polish and not on the entire nail, but where the tear is.
Thanks, for answering this. It was "just in case" and I would certainly continue the NGF.

Message: One time I had a split on the side of my nail, and I was on vacation and did not want one nail so much shorter, so there was a drug store find that I used. It was like a piece of clear tape in a small oval shape. I just taped it on my nail. I was wearing polish at the time, so I painted a coat of polish over the tape. It stayed on for a few days, even though the package said the repair would last for days & days. Eventually I just filed the nail short to get rid of the split portion. But, if filing the split portion off would cause the nail to be too short and be painful, I would try a repair like this or something similar.
