Subject: acrylics or gel - my dilemma!

Message:
hi all, i'm a 29 year old living in melbourne australia - the whole nail salon thing is taking off here now and this has made getting these services a lot more affordable. my dilemma is that my own nails have been more prone to breakages and just don't look very nice as i get older. i also hate that any nail polish i use will chip in about 2-5 days. hence i want to make the investment and start getting my nails done. my nail technician said acrylic or gels are both just as harmful to the nails - no real difference. i am someone that is pretty hard on my nails and want them to last - i am just looking at getting a permanent french manicure. please let me know what you think as your horror stories have made me somewhat dismayed. thanks :o)

Yana, you don't know me and I'm sure if you read the horror stories, you have seen that most of the ladies on her have each posted at least one. I had HORRIBLE nails all of my life. Mine were so bad, that even at holidays, when we would go to my in-laws, my one sister-in-law and her daughter would always remark how awful my nails were and how unfortunate that I couldn't have nails like they do. The nicest thing I can say about the 2 of the is that they DO have beautiful nails, unlike their personalities. This has always made me self-conscious and embarrassed by my nails.

When I "met" the lovely ladies of this board, namely Dapme, Moi, Sheltie and Barbara, I thought I would give this product a try. In my first email to Barbara, never once did she suggest that I try her product, and it was a personal note about the bad experiences on the QBBs. I listened to Dapme, Moi and Sheltie, and realized what a lovely person Barbara is, and I thought I would give it a try. After all, Sally Hansen never sent me a personal note, nor did the people from Nailtique or Develop 10. LOL

If you could only see my nails now, as compared to 4 weeks ago! I wish you could see the improvement. The nail beds are healthy and pink and the tips are white, and there has not been one crack, peel or split and my ridges are barely visible. My nails look like a french manicure, and I'm not saying it's that really WHITE WHITE TIP, it's just a healthy white tip. (I love a french manicure too, and have never had nails long enough to have one). This is natural, and shiny, and to bring the shine up another notch, I use the buffer with the NGF cream. It isn't the opalescence you have with a french manicure, but it is so close to a really nice french manicure.

Please don't go the "fake" nail route! If you do, and your nails will be damaged, that is a guarantee, you will already be behind the curve. What the ladies say on here is the truth. Certainly this entire kit will not cost as much as the initial cost of the "fake" nails (and yes, they look beautiful - I agree), but between the nails being put on, the fills, the pain when the nail lifts, the repairs when a tip breaks, possible infections, allergic reactions and all of the other things that can go wrong, NGF is a much better bargain. If you don't get the results you want, you can always try the "fake" nails, but to prevent the damage to your nails, do yourself a favor and even just try the NGF cream, and you will come back for the entire kit, if you don't want the entire thing to start with. You will not be sorry! This is not a paid announcement, I have no affiliation with the company, I only know that for the first time in my life I have nails I can be proud of. They are not long yet, but the are intact, no breakage, no chipping, and when you use the buffer for the higher shine, the shine does not chip off like a clear coat. The entire nails is shiny, and to bring it back, it's just some buffing with the buffer.

You have to do it twice a day, and a minute on each finger, or use the buffer as Barbara and some of the other ladies do. I like to take the time and massage each nail with the NGF cream, because it feels good, and I feel I am taking care of each nail equally, but that's my preference. If you follow the directions, you WILL NOT BE SORRY!

Good luck, but please rethink the "fake" nails. They do entensive damage, and there is no pain like the pain you experience when the nail lifts from your real nail. It brings tears to your eyes!

Good luck and I hope this helped!!!!!

Yana,
Here is something to just consider.

Why not concentrate your time, energy, efforts, and money, on you own natural nails. This way you will not run the risk of damaging you nails. You will have your OWN beautiful natural nails nails. You will have no reason to seek medical attention. And your wallet will not bleed out!
You wont have to keep weekly appointments at some salon. You wont have to pay someone to damage your nails and you can spend the saved money on something that will be of benefit, like a new lip gloss or eye shadow.
Bottom line here, it is a personal decision. Only you can make that final judgement call. You can read through all of the posts prior to these and find out a hundred reasons why it is ill advised to move in the direction of the fake nails. And what ever name they call them, they are fakes, they are dangerous, they are time consuming, they are costly. And they set you up to let you down.
Then you don't just start from square one, you start from a minus 10!

Please don't get any kind of fake nails. They will destroy your own nails. They also have too many risks associated with them, such as allergic reactions, injuries, and infections. I'm sure you don't want to end up like my aunt, who got a nasty fungal infection and had one of her natural nails rot off due to acrylics. Acrylic and gel nail enhancement products have also been shown to severely damage the integrity of the natural nail, leading to permanent damage. Please reconsider getting fakes and put your efforts into making your own nails healthy.

Hi Yana, (beautiful name by the way)

Yes, I must echo Karen's sentiments to you. I have had more than my share of nail salon horrors. Since you still have nails that have been untouched by "the drill", please give NGF a try. You have nothing to lose, if it doesn't work for you, you can always ignore what we've said and go for your full set of acrylics. However, the damage that you incur with the acrylics is not worth it.

I personally have not purchased the entire kit yet, I have the NGF cream so far. I've been using for just coming up on 1 week, and the results have been really satisfactory for me. My cuticles are much better, and my nails are looking healthier than they have ever looked, despite the acrylic damage that I have to grow out. So, as you already know, we speak from experience about the dangers of acrylics. If your nail tech already told you that acrylics and gels are harmful, take that advice to heart...Don't do it!

Yana, I'm glad the other ladies are echoing my advice. As Barbara said, if you get the "fake" nails you will be at minus 10 because of the damage they cause, and if you don't take anything else to heart, that we have said here, that is the one thing you have to know, your nails will be damaged.

Good luck, and please let us know what you decide. We won't be upset if you go with the fakes, and we will still be here if you do and need help later, with no "We told you so" either.

One thing about the fake nails, I know a lot of people like the look, but I have always thought they looked fake-fake-fake. (Plus of course the fact that they damage your natural nails.) I would much prefer to have healthy natural nails. It does not cost much to try the small jar of NGF cream. It is worth it to try this product, and then you can be admiring your own natural nails! I started by ordering the whole kit, and got the file, buffer, buffing cream and cream. I am glad that I did. The cream will last a long time, and the file and buffer are very good quality and do a great job. You are so far ahead, you do not have damage from the fakes, so you can just start to condition your natural nails, buff & rub, and even after the first few days you will see a difference. Good Luck.
