Subject: tortoise shell type effect on thumb nails
Message: Hi,
For the last 3 years or so both of my thumbnails have a strange rippled, almost tortoise shell effect to them. They seem thicker than they should be and there is a line up the middle of sort of "folds" which is very hard to describe. Also from the side they appear much more curved than they should be.
I was wondering if any of you nailcare experts could help me out as to what deficiency/condition might be causing this as I have spent endless nights searching on google and so far nothing has helped.
Thanks,
MrLovely

Message: MrLovely,
when you wrote, "thicker than they should be", the first thing that pops in my head is fungal. sometimes it just affects one or two fingers, and sometimes just the toes. have you been to see a dermatologist?

Message: I have the same issue....and only on my thumbs. It's been there for about 20 years. Years ago I was told it's a lack of calcium - I don't drink milk. About 5 years ago I saw a dermatologist for another reason and he said it's a "repetitive motion injury". I cannot imagine what motion causes that to happen to only my thumb nails. The right is much worse than the left, but both have a ripple running lengthwise and unless I keep them cut very short, they hurt alot. Also the light white part that is normally very close to the base of the nail extends almost halfway down the nail. Its brittle in the center and thick at the sides. Any advice would be appreciated.

Message: Sorry for the late reply....Jay, I have had a calcium deficiency covering approximately the time since the weird nails started....I would imagine that is what it is, I have started taking lots of calcium supplements to try to "heal" myself but it will take months before I can see any effects in the nails.
Do you experience irritability or nerves Jay?
Thanks for your replies Jay and Cheryl.

Message: I forgot to mention I also have the "moon" part covering almost half the nail. Your problem sounds almost exactly the same as mine Jay, hope we can help each other out here!

Message: I too have rippled thumb nails. They don't grow very long and the moon area covers most of the nail. It's embarassing to say the least. I was treated for a fungal infection about 6 years ago before the nail was tested and it turned out to NOT be a fungus. My nails continue to ripple to this day. Some months are not as bad as others. It seems to be spreading to my index finger on the one hand. The one thing I find helpful being a female is having acrylic laid on top of the nails to make them appear normal.

Message: I believe the condition is called "habit tic deformity". You can find good information about it on google. I have been unconsciously picking at the cuticle on my thumbnails, which has caused this effect....I stopped doing this about a month ago, and it seems like the nail is returning to normal. Hope this helps other people who have this weird nail condition.

This is how mine looks, except the ridges aren't broken like that, they run the entire length of the nail from cuticle to tip. So when you rub your finger across the nail widthwise, you feel all the ripples.
There is no discoloration and all the ridges seem fairy uniform. I also dont pick at my cuticles.
I too dont drink much milk though, so I will definitely try to get more calcium and hope this helps.
