Subject: Split flaky nails/biting skin
Message: I chew on my FINGERS (the skin around and below nail area) a quarter of the way down my fingers.
I have had this nasy habit for at least 19 years (I'm 25) Just recently 1 finger NAIL and 2 thumb NAILS started turning white and flaky in the middle, and is peeling. One thumbnail is split down the middle and very painful. Could it be related to my finger chewing? And what can I do?

Message: it is directly related to your chewing. it could be a fungal infection from them staying wet all the time, sounds like an infection could be starting up too. the split in your thumbnail is a result of the nail being in your mouth and wet all the time and then drying out and dehydrating. fungal infections should be treated by a doctor who can test to see if it is bacterial or fungal. they need to stay out of your mouth. soaking the painful nail in hydrogen peroxide and then putting on some neosporin at night will help, but they are just going to continue to get worse if you keep on gnawing.
