Subject: Removing silks- myself or nail tech?

Message:
Should I soak them off in acetone myself or have a manicurist do it? I know when I had my silks changed the last time, she had to file quite a bit of the silk/glue/power off even after I had soaked for 10 minutes.

I can't wait to be wrap free and use the NGF!

Thanks :)

Jennifer,
i would be comfortable doing it myself, but i know i'm not going to hurt myself either! i was "sanded" one too many times and left with burns to trust someone else to do it. the liquid and powder which makes up the acrylic can be scrapped off when soaked in warmed up acetone and it takes more than 10 minutes usually. i don't know enough about the silk part to tell you whether it will come off easy or not. warming a glass bowl of acetone set over into a larger bowl of very warm water helps keep the acetone from cooling and making you feel like your fingers have frostbite. if you feel comfortable having the nail tech remove them, then i would go that route-just don't let her talk you into putting a new set back on.

Thanks Cheryl! I definitely will not be getting new ones! It's too expensive, time consuming and painful. I also feel it is a fungus disaster waiting to happen. I know a really nice manicurist who tried to convice me not to do silks and ruin my nails, so I will probably go to her. If not, I'll try your warming the acetone trick for sure!

You always give great advice, so let me ask you another question. With the NGF, do you trim your cuticles or not? I've always had a ton of cuticle growth and my nails look really bad if the cuticles are not taken care of often.

Jennifer,
well thank you. i can be a little blunt sometimes, but i always try to just tell the truth-all from my own painful experiences, i'm afraid to say. everything i give advice about i've really been through. i don't trim my cuticles at all anymore. i don't know if it's because they stay so well moisturized from the formula or because i try and pay more attention to my cuticles in particular when rubbing it in. you will find once you start using the NGF your cuticles will be in such better shape. not having the acrylics will save them from so much dehydration. give them a couple of weeks after you start using the formula, to heal from the removal, to see some progress. cutting cuticles is removing the barrier between your nail bed and the area actually down in your finger. they weren't meant to be cut. they really are there for a reason.

Hi Jen,
Just think of your cuticles as a little bumper guard protection the rim of the finger and the edge of the structure of the nails. You really can rely on Cheryl, for truthful insightful information and the part about being blunt too! She's great.....If you have other issues just come on back. We will all be right here.
And once again Cheryl thanks for all of your help here!
