 Subject: Slammed finger in car door.

It's Tuesday afternoon right now. On Sunday night (12am) I slammed my finger in a car door. It's now all swollen and part of my thumb is black and blue and my nail is all black/blue/purple. I went to the doctor too late so they couldn't use a needle to relieve the pressure so they basically said that I'm screwed. I'll eventually lose the nail but I have to work on Thursday and I just wanted to know about how long will the throbbing pain go on for? It's been two days and I really don't care about my nail or the bruising. I just want the pain to stop.
About how long will it hurt for? The doctor didn't tell me. He pretty much just said, "You're going to lose your nail. It'll take 3 or 4 months :)"

if the doctor had drained the blood it would have relieved the pressure built up under the nail, which is causing most of the throbbing. i don't quite understand why he couldn't do it. you could do it on your own if you wanted to. you can try soaking in warm water and epsom salts. that would help take some of the swelling down.

I did the same thing-slammed my finger in car door about 5 hours ago. The finger is really swollen now, however there is no discoloration under the nail. It slammed around my knuckle. Should I still try to get it drained or is that when it is around the nail?

that's only when blood is trapped under the nail bed and exerting pressure. if you slammed the door on the knuckle bone i would be concerned that you may have broken your finger.

I smashed my thumb in a car door 2 months ago. It was the most awful pain. Bruised blood,swelling and throbbing! The works! It used to gross people out;including myself. Now it's feeling better but still looks a little bit hideous. Luckily a new nail is growing underneath, pushing the old one off. Till then, I already have my costume for Halloween. I'm going as " The Thumb". Ha Ha!. Seriously, it's no laughing matter when it happens. I'm ever so careful now. Take care.

My husband had his finger slammed in the car door Sat. It's now Tues. afternoon. He's still complaining about pain throbbing and the nail is black underneath. I had never heard of this but someone told us to puncture the nail with a straight pin. Should we now?

The black under the nail is dried blood. Puncturing the nail now will probably not relieve the pressure. It is only when the blood is still fluid that this approach will help.

you can sterilize a straight pin and try a small puncture. at this point it's not going to hurt anything and if there is some built up pressure from the blood it should come out. sounds like he will eventually lose the nail though.

Hi, I also slammed my thumb in the car door...this was 5 days ago. The nail is black underneath, and part of my thumb also, but I am concerned because it is still REALLY swollen and my skin is turning blacker and blacker is this normal?

If you have not yet been to dr. I would first suggest that you have it looked at to rule out any breaks or worse yet fractures. They take longer to heal and cause more pain than a clean break.
If it is still turning darker as time passes, there is the likelihood that there are broken blood vessels, and you are slowly bleeding internally. See a Dr ASAP to rule out these things.
For swelling and soreness, use ice packs.

Saturday morning I slammed my finger in the car door. I went to the Doctor and put 3 holes in it on Monday. The blood came out and it felt better. I haven't gone to work because any pressure on my finger hurts. The Dr. also gave me a tetnus shot. I had alot of care for my finger. He said that if a finger is broken at the end, there isn't much they can do about it. It has to heal naturally. Be careful is all I have to say.
