Subject: i dont think my nail is growing
Message: hi,
about a month ago i got my finger jammed in a car door. half of the nail from the end to the base has filled up with blue stuff that i think is blood. ever since it happened my other nails have grown much quicker than this finger and i am desperate to get it back to normal because i have cut sections off to get the dry blood out in hope to help things move along. should i continue cutting sections off and clearing the blood out with a sterilised pin? or should i just tape it up and wait? any help would be great. thanks in advance...

Message: Bryan,
I slammed the car door on my ring finger on my left hand in 1980....I feel your pain. I still have a slight scar on the corner of that finger where a chunk of meat was taken. It bled for almost 24 hours after the incident. The blue is in fact dried blood and bruising. It will grow out. Don't pick, poke and prod the already traumatized area. Try to keep the injured hand above the heart to slow the blood flow to the effected area.
I slept on my back with my hand on a pillow placed at my left side. This helped stop the throbbing every time my heart would beat. I kept a loose gauze wrap on the finger during the day and open to the air at night. The healing was slow but it was through. Keep the area clean and use Neo Sporin Plus Ointment on the area. It will heal, but it does take time. Keep us posted on the healing process. Take great care not to injure the effected area again. If you did not damage the matrix the nail will grow back to be healthy and you should not have any long lasting difficulties from the injury.

Message: yow! that just makes me cringe in pain. i probably would have asked the dr. for his opinion on the going back to work. getting it dirty at work while it heals is not a good thing. you don't want an infection. you can use neosporin at night wrapped loosely with a gauze bandage. not letting the "wound" dry out will help the nail grow back. give it through the weekend and see how it feels or call the doctor who saw you. good luck.
