Subject: smashed fingernails!
Message: I have two smashed fingernails as a result from a hammer at work. They're halfway grown out and the new nails are halfway grown in. The dead nails constantly snag on everything and this is very painful but theres too much nail too just simply tear it away. Please help, any advice is appreciated.

Message: Trim the "length" from your injured nails and then put neosporin ointment on your injury and cover the entire nail with bandaid. Don't wrap the bandaid too tight around your finger or you'll cut off circulation. Use several bandaids if necessary. You can also apply a bandaid to go over the end of your finger, no more snagging. Change your bandaids daily and keep the injured fingers clean. Neosporin will promote healing and aid in the prevention of infection. Good luck!

Message: Soak it in water for about an hour. Get a pair of needle nosed plyers and pull it off.
Try to have someone smack you in the face.
Like this:
Count to 3. 1 - 2 - 3 GO!
And at the same time, pull the nail while someone hits you in the face.

Message: chris - glad you got some relief. Believe it or not that's probably what they would have done for you in the emergency room. It's the blood buildup under the nail that creates that throbbing pressure.
Don't rip that black nail off yet! It's injured but still alive and very much attached to your bed. You could end up with an infection. A new nail will start growing from your cuticle and push that one out, sort of like teeth when a new one comes in. In a few weeks, that old one will start lifting and you can trim. You just have to deal with the grossness for a while. Maybe paint your other nails black to match! Try to be patient.

Message: My thumb was the bearer of more impact that the nail was. About 70% of it turned black underneath, and the rest is fine. This happened about 3 weeks or a month ago. I'm able to trim the nail back that had black underneath it... but how long dows it take a new nail to grow in? Is there anything to promote faster growth?

Message: it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to grow a complete new nail. when you injure it, it might take longer than normal. keeping it hydrated will help with the growth process.
