 Subject: possible loss of nail??

About a month ago a lightly closed the car door on my thumb.(I did not slam it on my thumb sort of like a pinch). A black bruise formed underneath. Everything seemed to be fine until I notice that today near the base of my thumb there seems to be a slight hole in the nail base.(just above the cuticle) I am afraid that I will loose the nail. Will the loss of the nail be painful? Is there anything that I can do to lessen any pain that there might be? This is the first time that this has happened to me and I am just a bit freightened by the whole thing.

Judy, the exact same thing happened to me about a month ago. I lightly closed the door on my right thumbnail, pulled it out in time (well, from getting smashed), and a black spot is from the bottom of the nail to about 1/2 up. There's no hole, but there are small white specks on the bottom, but as they move up, it's still black underneath. My doctor said it will just have to grow out. It looks like it'll take years.

Judy, Marc, and Glen... just keep an eye on the nail for now. If you beging to have pain associated with it, go see your Dermatologist. If the nail has a hole in it, REALLY keep an eye on it because you can wind up with a really bad bacterial infection. The same goes for when the nail releases from the bed as it's growing out. Water gets trapped and bacteria breed and when it starts in on your flesh under the nail it can cause pain.
Tennille, more than likely you have had a couple of little blood vessels close to the nail bed pop. That's no big deal, it will grow out in a line until the vessel heals itself. If it gets bothersome just seeing it as it's growing out, you can always put polish on over it. Now, still keep an eye on it, if you begin to have pain or discomfort GO TO YOUR DERMATOLOGIST.
Just don't pick at it or pry on it or try to dig it out you could make a minor situation into a bad one, or make a real problem worse.

i also have a black spot on my toenail, i have no idea how it got there. My nail seems to have another nail growing underneath it, and the skin on that toe is dry and cracked. what is wrong with my toe?
