Subject: Infected ThumbNail
Message: Hi. A couple of months ago I got too enthusiastic cleaning my thumb nail (went too deep) and since then the skin under the nail (right up the top) has been sore (I think infected) and the skin around the nail is flaky - a bit like eczma.
The doctor said usually the immune system should've cleared it up in about 2-3 weeks but mine hasn't cleared up.
What can I do to clear this up?

Message: Pour some Hydrogen Peroxide on it to help with possible infection first. Did you puncture, or scrape? Puncture wounds take a lot longer to heal.
What did the doctor instruct you to do? Offering up that bit of information should have been a free visit! It may remain sore for quite some time if you punctured it. To ease the flaky skin get you some vitamin e oil to apply to the tip if the finger where it is flaking. Don't peel that skin. It will only take it longer to recover. After you rinse it well with the peroxide, you might squeeze a bit of Neosporin in the area too. Cover it with a Band-Aid to prevent it being injured further. Be conscious to rinse it with the peroxide daily until it doesn't react by "foaming" when applied. Take care and let us know how the healing process is going.

Message: Thanks for your advice - I'll try it. I think I actually punctured the skin. The doctor didn't offer any advice! No he wasn't very helpful and it cost $50 for the visit!
No I haven't been peeling the flaking skin. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again.

Message: Hi.
Well I've applied Hydrogen Peroxide twice daily and applied Tea-tree oil to the area for 2 months now, with no joy.
I don't think the problem is a fungal infection - the nail had simply come away from the nail bed (the area is white) and it just won't heal.
Do you have any other advice??

Message: The same thing happened to my daughter about a year ago. She punctured the skin under her nail and it turned into a fungal infection. A fungal infection usually comes from dirty instruments. It is so important to make sure that anything that goes under that nail is clean. I never use sharp instruments near my nails. If I need to clean under the nail, I find a nail brush with soft bristles is best.
The first thing is to make sure it is a fungal infection. Proper diagnosis is key!! Then, her doctor said she simply needed to treat with Lamisil. That is a product that is generally used for athlete's feet, which is a fungal infection.
Good Luck and I hope it gets better.
