Subject: complete loss of a nail
Message: My husband smashed his finger with mallet and the entire nail came off. We do not think his finger is broken, he has movement. But I am concerned about the nail "matrix"...I am not sure exactly what that is and if his is intact. I am wondering what would be the best treatment? We have treated it with Neosporin and bandages and it seems ok. How long will a new nail take to grow back? thank you!

Message: Beth,
The matrix is located at the base of the nail. It is basically the root, where the growth takes place. If the matrix is severly tramatized, there may be a chance that the nail will not grow back. Is there blood or brusing at the base of the nail? And if you don't have any, I would suggest that you pick up some Batadine Wash to clean the area well. If there is severe swelling, put a few ice cubes in a small bowl of water and just "dunk" the digit in and out slowly to help reduce that swelling a bit. The Neosporin is a great antiseptic...Continue that and make absolutely certain there is no more trama inflicted on the region. Give him asprin to reduce any inflimation if he can take asprin...That is about all I really know to do. May be someone else has better information than I do. If they do, please elaborate.

Message: Barbara gives excellent emergency advice! Betadine is a good starting point. (I used to work for a podiatry office.) The only thing I would change on that is that he use Polysporin or Bacitracin. Neosporin has some ingredient that can cause itching. It's not even recommended anymore for ear piercing or tattoo aftercare. It's also not air-permeable.
I would imagine in a week or so, he will see new nail peeking out of his cuticle. Once initial tenderness is gone, he'll want to keep that exposed skin hydrated so it doesn't crack till the new nail grows over. A small jar of the Natural Growth Formula could help with that!
And, Beth, don't forget to kiss the booboo!

Message: michelle,
yow. as long as the matrix, the living, growing tissue beneath the nail wasn't damaged or crushed too badly then the nail should grow back. it might take a few months, and there could be ridges or white bruises eventually that may show up from the injury itself, but i believe it will be fine. the young heal well!
