Subject: Smashed Toe ?
Message: 5 weeks ago I dropped a power washer nozzle on my big toe 1/8" from the quick at the back of the nail. I knew something was up when the pain didn't go away for 3 days. It swelled up, turned black and blue and a little blood came out the sides. After the pain and swelling went down, the nail lifted up diagonally back at the quick and left side about 10 oclock to 4 oclock on the nail. The upper right side is still normal and intact. I can see a new nail growing in under the injured one at the back.
The BIG question is, should I cut off the part of the nail that's detached and lifted up?
I don't know if exposing the nail bed is a good idea or leaving the nail on where bacteria can form under it.

Message: i guess the only part that concerns me is that a new nail is trying to grow under the injured part. it won't grow correctly. the detached part needs to come off because it will not re-attach after injury and loss of tissue that keeps it going. i don't know that i would do it myself though. you risk infection by not using sterilized instruments. by not doing it correctly, you stand a chance of creating an ingrown toenail problem eventually.

Message: Actually, the new nail is growing under the nail that's unattached and lifted up.
It's also unattached and lifted up on the left side to front but fine on the front right part.

Message: well then, have that unattached part removed i say! when you say "it's also unattached and lifted up", do you mean the new nail or the injured? just trying to grasp the whole picture here.
