Subject: Pinky nail off
Message: Yesterday I was walking my dog and my fake nail hit the leash, pulled backwards and my fake nail along with my real nail got pulled away from my nail bed. I ended up cutting off the rest of my nail since it was causing me more pain. I looked at it today and the nailbed is very red and painful. The tip of my finger also seems a little swollen and my cuticle is a bit bruised. Is this normal or should I go to the doctor?

Message: Michelle,
Keep the nail, cuticle, and surrounding area as clean and bacteria free as possible. I would suggest to you that you remove the remaining fakes before anything else goes dreadfully awry....
Use an antiseptic ointment on the area. Bandage it at night so you don't further the damage in your sleep. You can get some really valuable insight on all of this by looking at some of the other responses to questions previously asked on the forum discussion board.
If you have any Betadine Wash, Clean the area with that and then apply an ointment to help the healing..Some Neosporin Plus will be of great benefit here.
Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

Message: Michelle,
the bruising, swelling and redness is very typical of an injury like this. keep it clean and you shouldn't have any trouble. might want to re-think the whole acrylic thing. it happened once, it could happen again. the acrylics are attached with some pretty severe adhesive. your natural nail should not have come off with the acrylic.

Message: I also agree that you should have your remaining fakes removed. My aunt and one of my cousins told me that it hurts really bad if an acrylic nail breaks or rips off. I think it hurts them if one of their acrylic nails rip off because the natural nail usually comes off with it. I know that all artificial nails are attached with very strong adhesives and harsh chemicals. All fake nails are eventually going to be ruining everyone's natural nails. That's what happened to my aunt. I don't wear fakes now because of her "horror story".
