Subject: Acrylic nails and nail biting
Message: Hello all,
I just wanted to share my experience regarding acrylic nails and nail biting. I have been a compulsive nail picker (not biting, but picking at my nails and tearing them off instead of using a nail clipper) since I was a child and until about 3 months ago (I am now in my late 20’s). I decided to get acrylics done 3 months ago as I was job searching at the time and did not feel confident at all given the shape my nails were in. While they were on, I found it very hard to pick at my nails as they were very thick and didn’t have any chipped free edges to tear away from. I have tried numerous times to grow out my nails, and about 2 mm of free white nail will grow out, but I inevitably pick away at them again until they were about 5 mm long. In any case, I had the acrylics on for about 2 months, and it literally stopped my nail-picking dead in its tracks, since I couldn’t pick away at it. I did finally take them off about a month ago, and I couldn’t believe the difference. I had been a little wary about never being able to form a proper long nail bed, but I could see that the pink part of my nail bed had extended past what they had ever been before and were starting to look normal again. I now preen my natural nails religiously and make sure they don’t have any free edges to snag onto, and put hardener on about twice a week. My new nails are not noticeably thinner as many people on this board have said what will happen after acrylics are removed.
The bottom line is that acrylics worked for me in getting rid of my nail-picking habit after 20+ years. I only wish I had done it earlier. I never knew it could be so easy. Once I get my hands on a camera I would love to post pictures of my new nails. I really have tried many, many times to grow them out cold turkey and it just never worked. A few people on this board have said that you have to get to the root of the problem in order to stop nail biting, but acrylics does get to the root of the problem – it prevents you from doing it, and once you can’t for a few weeks, you will ‘lose’ the habit. Nail picking became a nervous/nothing-to-do habit for me, but once I couldn’t do it, the tendency to pick at my fingers was gone. Although this method may not work for everyone, it did for me.

Message: leslie,
i am very happy that acrylics worked for you. it just wasn't for me as i've stated before, and not, for a lot of women, who from this forum alone, have damage everyday. acrylics just "covered up" the problem for me, not to mention the fungus, destroyed nail bed and infections i battled through. i never had a picking habit, i guess. i finally had to realize that i deserved to have pretty, strong, healthy nails and cold turkey was what worked best. one thing i've learned, in my young 43 years, is that there are always two sides to a story. keep them strong, natural and well hydrated.

Message: Great news for you Leslie, well done, my trouble is, I have bitten my natural nails down so low, that, there's nothing for the acrylics to adhere to !

Message: Lucy,
Go ahead and count your blessings....The fact that you don't have enough nail to adhere to could work in your favor. Instead of biting, start rubbing the surface of the nails and pushing the cuticles back with your fingertips. It will keep both hands occupied, away from your mouth and allow the nails to begin to recover. Do not add insult to injury by getting fakes put on the nails you have left. Use some vitamin e oil to rub into the nails just to provide some moisture balance to the cuticles.

Message: Thanks, Cheryl & Lucy for your messages. I do agree it might not be the method for most people, but there are other methods out there that have worked and succeeded for others. I'm sure with patience and determination you will have beautiful, long, healthy nails.

Message: Leslie, count yourself lucky - perhaps it was the short time period. I just held one of my fingers up to the screen. I can see the color difference between the gray background and black letters and read some letter through one of mine.
Lucy, Until I was 28 and had acrylics, I bit my nails til they bled. Try Barbara's stuff first.
