Subject: nail bed
Message: I removed acrylic nails several months ago. Nine of my nails grew back to normal, but one is lifted off the nail bed clear back to the cuticle. It seemed to be growing out OK but now I can see under the nail where it's not connected to the bed at all. My finger tip is now getting red and swollen and sore. Could I have gotten an infection or is this normal when the nail is not connected to the bed? Any information would be helpful.... Thanks

Message: it sounds like it is infected or at least on its way to becoming infected. that particular nail was probably thinned out way too much under the acrylics and it would have lifted with or without the acrylic. you might have gotten an infection under the lifted nail or a fungus, but that is much rarer. the nail bed is not going to re-attach. it will need to come off so a new nail bed will hopefully start growing attached this time. you probably need to go see a dermatologist so they can evaluate it and decide whether it needs to be removed or not. i wouldn't try it myself especially with the possibility of an infection looming.
