Subject: Going Natural

Message:
Hi everyone. Very interesting discussions here in this forum. Currently I have solar nails and have had them for about 1 month, not the same ones though. Anyway, I am tired of the maintenance involved (I'm a low-maintenance gal) and would like to go back to my original nails. They did destroy the nail surface, under the gel stuff, so I'm concerned with how my nails will look once the tips are removed and the hardened gel stuff is gone. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to remove/grow these solar nails out? Also, when I went to the salon to get advice about how to make my nails look healthy again, I was recommended these solar nails. After reading some discussion here, I realize I was probably misinformed. :-( Prior to the solar nails, my nails would flake at the ends, in the same places ALL THE TIME. One would also break, or chip (?) off, in the same place, same finger. That is why I thought seeking professional help at a salon would be good. Thanks for any advice and suggestions :-) On the other hand, the solar nails are very pretty and for some reason whenever i get regular manicures (or paint my nails myself) the polish just chips right off since I type a lot. So I'm wanting pretty nails, but natural ones. Thanks for your time :-D

Hannah,
yes, we do have interesting discussions here! solar nails come off the same as acrylic nails, soaking in acetone. trying to grow out the solar nails is just delaying the enevitable. start the healing process as soon as possible. they are going to look bad at first. there really isn't any way around it. you do not have healthy nail beds, no matter what anybody else tries to make you believe. after you remove them it's going to take a little while for some healing. your fingers might be sore and sensitive for a few days from the soak. acetone remover is not a "nice" chemical, but is the only thing that will remove them. i don't say these things to scare you, just want you to have all the information. healthy, natural nails are not going to be immediate. it sounds like your nail or nails were dehydrated before you started the enhancements(flake, break, chip), as most of ours are. the natural nails growth formula, from this site, rescued mine after i removed the acrylics for the last time. it's the best i've ever come across. use it, don't use it, read about it, don't-i'm not here to push it in any way. it just works. whatever you decide to hydrate your nails with, just do it on a daily basis and most importantly, have patience for your nails to recover. i'm sure other women here can add more. i just come across as a "broken record" it feels like. if i can help anymore through the removal process just ask. you can have beautiful, natural, healthy nails again.

it is nail polish remover. you can buy non-acetone or acetone. it's with all the nail products. when you are ready to soak them i can give some advice that makes it a bit easier.

Advice sounds great :-) I'm ready to soak these suckers. I'd much rather do it myself than pay the salon to do it. Thanks!

Hannah,
the acetone remover works quicker and better if you can keep it warm. pour some acetone remover into a glass bowl then set that bowl over into a bigger plastic bowl filled with warm water. just enough to keep the glass bowl warm. acetone can have a very cold feeling to it if you don't warm it up first. soak one finger at a time, because as soon as you remove that finger, the acrylic will immediately start to harden up again. take an orange stick, another drug store find, and gently scrape the softened acrylic away. you have to be quick, because you don't have much time. this whole process takes a while. just remember it's better to scrape away as much as you can. i've had them removed in salons where they've just "popped" them right off. took off layers of my own nail and left me with bruised, sore fingers. i just didn't know any better back then. i do now. i did a couple, then warmed up the acrylic again. you will need to really moisturize when your all done. i have a hand and foot parafin wax tub here at home that put oils back in and helped with the soreness of doing that to my fingers. let us know the condition of your nails when you're done removing. good luck and be patient.

Thanks Cheryl. I'm going to try this tonight while I do some long awaited reading... I have another question.

The second place I went to for the solar nails clipped my nails real short before attaching them (the first place didn't do that, they left my real nails the normal length) so I'm sure they will look uneven and horrible when I remove the solar nails since 3 weeks have passed. Can I file my nails after removing them or will I risk inflicting more damage? (I hate filing my nails so the thought is just adding more chills down my neck.)

Thanks for your advice so far.

Hannah,
you can file them and will probably need to, to smooth the ragged edges. just do so very gently. in the soft shape they will be in, it's very easy to overdo. get a file that is made of stone. the one, found on this site, needs to be soaked for 30 seconds in water and then you can file back and forth with no problem and you don't get that "nails across a chalkboard" sensation. but, since you are doing this, this evening, you obviously won't have this one, but i've seen files similar in beauty supply stores. i can't vouch for their durability like i can this one, but please don't use a low grit file. your fragile nails will shred. eventually you will be able to buff them when they are recovered and get a nice shine.
