Subject: nail broke too low...
Message: well, actually i have a pet lizard and he bit my finger the other day...and the fingernail broke half way down and half way across. i have been keeping a bandage on there but what a pain in the butt...i can't do anything with it and it is my right index finger.
the thing is, it is not connected to the nailbed at the area of the break, but it is still connected at the top. it will catch on things and i'm afraid that it will tear. i was wondering if i can somehow expediate (somewhat painlessly) the pulling at the tip of the nail so that i can just cut the flap off...
...or maybe i should just get a fake nail to put over it until it grows out some? that way, i won't have to deal with the bandages and what not?
please some advice...thanks

Message: is it possible to clip down the part that keeps catching? i think anything you do to it now is probably going to hurt. if you put an acrylic over it you are going to have so many more problems than you do now, when you remove it. without seeing it, it's just so hard to say what you should do. keep a bandaid over it. the last thing you want to do is catch it and rip it further. sorry i can't be more help.

Message: A year ago I would probably say that acrylic or silk wrap is not a bad idea, but right now I wouldn’t put anything except Neosporin and antibacterial Band-Aid. Keep this nail as short as possible. Try to put thick coat of clear nail polish like ”hard as nails” or something like that and keep it handy, so you can use it any time you need. But if for any reason you decide to cover your boo-boo with acrylic be 200% sure that place you go is clean, and don’t hesitate to ask nail Tec how sterile her implements are (You may also bring your own). You don’t want to have fungus or anything else on the top of the damage you have now. Keep in mind that primer they use for bonding might burn like h… if your nail is damaged. Also DON’T LET ANYBODY TUCH YOUR NAILS WITH A DRILL. The worst thing nail tecs do when they use drill on natural nails (especially when they use it right after previous customer).
I hope you won’t do it and patiently let your nail grow.

Message: i wouldnt band it up. The best thing that you can do is keep it clean and try putting some proffesional nail glue, something that has ethyl in, this is a very safe glue to use and can be put into cracks in the nail. Try and glue it together, if that is not posible why not look for a creative nail salon and ask for fabric, it is very good sorting out repairs.

Message: thank you for your answers! i am not concerned about my nailbed getting infected, as where it had pulled away had already healed quite nicely. also, there is no way to clip off the part that catches...that is my biggest problem.
i would never let anybody drill holes in my fingernails! the idea of it makes me cringe like fingernails on a chalkboard...
i took things into my own hands yesterday, though, and i really hope that i didn't make a huge mistake. i am only a little concerned about it though. i went to the drug store and i got some acrylic nails and i applied them myself. i didn't mar the tops of my nails though, i didn't really care about the best adhesion, and i knew they were a temporary type thing.
now i can do normal everyday things like wash the dishes and take a shower without worrying about my bandaid coming off and me tearing the nailbed. i only wish for it to grow out a tiny bit so that it won't be attached at my fingertip and i can clip the stupid thing.
i am afraid, though, about fungus and stuff like you talked about...i didn't really think about that...what do you think?

Message: hey, they're your nails to do what ever you want to with. putting on your own set of acrylics will usually lead to fungus growing between the nail and the acrylic especially if creating a tight bond wasn't a high priority. all it takes is washing your hands once, and water, no matter how little, getting down in between. you will see it, it will be green and disgusting. if you used nail glue to apply the acrylics, then the only way to remove them is soaking them in acetone remover. that's going to feel "lovely" on your injured finger. can't wait to see how this one ends!

Message: Acrylics sold in drug stores usually don’t have primer. So, there is a big possibility of lifting. And you don’t want that.
You can use tea tree oil to prevent fungus at list ones a day, better twice (after shower and before bed) and keep an eye on it. Keep your hands dry. If tea tree oil will make your cuticle to dry dilute it with vitamin E oil.
I think using nail glue would be better solution. But it’s too late for right now. Just let’s see what happens.
P.S.IP: cache-los-aa08.proxy.aol.com, do you know if using oil will make acrylic lift too? I realy don't want to give bad advice.

Message: Just keep a real close eye on that nail where you applied the acrylic for now. Eventhough you have it covered, smoosh some Neosporin under there with a Qtip. Also watch for the greenies - fungus. If that happens, soak them off with acetone, then hydrate your nails real good afterwards. If you don't use the NGF from this site yet, soak them about 10 minutes in some warm olive oil. I've got the feeling you're going to have some separating soon, especially if your hands are in water.
I had a lifting edge of a thump nail that did that a few weeks ago. I patched that area with nail glue and a small piece of coffee filter (like a silk wrap) for a week, then just had to clip it off. Now it's at a comfortable length. That's one of the things that sent me running to this site too and consequently ordering this product.

Message: Lynnie,
that post was back last summer, so, i would have to think they are long gone and it either grew out, she cut it off, or she did the worst-covered it with an acrylic.

Message: catherine,
this is a natural nails formula. we discourage the use of acrylic nails because a vast majority of us, on this site, are trying to recover our nails after they were ruined by acrylics. the products represented on this site are for growing our own healthy nails. our "professional" opinion of acrylics is not something you really want to hear about from us. i'm sure there must be acrylic nail forums for addressing all the problems and dilemas you have. we're not it.
