Subject: how to stop bitting your nails
Message: I have been bitting my nails for a long time!
I have noticed that it helps if you keep gum or somthing chewy in your mouth instead! In school if you cant chew gum, chew on your pen or somthing, at least its not your nails! And always keep nail polish on, it helps your nails grow and if anything you can pick at that instead!
Hope it helps!

Message: Great alternative to the nail biting! Thanks for that helpful information.
Remember, you usually need more than just will power. You will have to replace the "bad" habit with a "good" habit. So don't give up the attempts to stop chewing. If you've made the conscious decision to stop, that is the first, and hardest step.....But the battle to stop is only in the beginning phase. Be diligent and reward yourself with a nice manicure at the end of the long week.

Message: I bit my nails for a very very long time too. I would paint my nails then pick off the polish and start biting them again. I finally went to a beauty shop and bought a bottle of clear polish called No Bite. It tastes like dandelion residue and would gross me out everytime I put a finger in my mouth. It did wash off eventually, so I had to apply it nearly every other day. But it was worth it because I haven't bit my nails in 6 weeks and they look beautiful. I never thought I would be able to quit biting them or have them look this nice.

Message: Mary,
good for you! wonderful self discipline. i remember when i was around 5 years old, my mom painting on some kind of polish that had a "hot" taste to it. i remember rubbing my eyes and being in agony. probably had cayenne pepper or worse in it. my poor mother swore she would never do anything like that to me again. kind of wish she had-took me 35 more years to quit gnawing!!

Message: It's always great to hear success stories from Nail Biters, or "Onocophagists" as I call them!
Growing beautiful nails should be a pleasure, not a chore. Invest in a nice nail file or even a nice little mini-manicure set and keep it in your handbag/pocket so when your out or at work you always have it handy.
A file I swear by for results is called a 'kanga-board'. It's light weight, disposable and files beautifully. I know Hawley cosmetics make them, or a very similar product to it, but it's still really good!

Message: Mary,
What is this 'kanga-board' made from?
If it is disposable how long does it last?
How much do they cost?
Our Wonder Stone Files are made of a natural stone that lasts 25+ years at a cost of $9.95. You can file in a back and forth motion with the Wonder Stone without fear of it shreading your nails. They do not have any pointed edges so they too should "fly" well...

Message: Hey Kudos in your decision to stop!
(I'm going to get serious about stopping smoking starting tomorrow.)
So, replacing the old habit with a new one:
1. Try setting your hand on your leg, with fingers curled under and simply (light pressure)straighten your fingers. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat ...
Why? My mom-n-law had gorgeous hard nails. She felt that 'habit' stimulated the circulation encouraging them to grow. You won't get in trouble for chewing gum or ruin your beautiful smile (teeth) on pens and pencils! This you can do with one hand while writing / listening in class.
2. When at home, the minute you catch yourself starting, grab a buffer or nail cream and work it in. (This is part of my stop smoking plan.)
I, unfortunately, spent 12 years with acrylics - the last 5-6 have been progressively more and more miserable with allergic reactions.
Let us know how the battle goes!

Message: Kayla,
Replace your *bad* biting habit with something constructive like buffing the nails instead. That will help keep both hands busy, keep them away from your little kisser, and build a healthy habit that will promote growth.

Message: Candie,
The only way I know of to "break" the habit is to *exchange* the bad biting habit for something that is more constructive and healthy. A lot of the girls on this forum have quit biting their nails by replacing the biting with rubbing in the Natural Nails Growth Formula instead.....
It keeps both hands busy and away from your kisser. Plus the fact that the formula will make your nails grow faster, and much healthier.... Just find a good habit to replace that chewing. Hope this will help.
