Subject: Infected Thumb
Message: I have acrylic nails and occasionally my thumb starts to swell around the nail and hurts like throbbing. I've tried poking it with a needle to burst it but only a little liquid comes out. Just when I think I can't stand the pain from the pressure anymore, it will 'burst' and I guess the 'infection' leaks out from under my nail. Does anyone have this or a similar problem? What is it and what can I do?

Message: i don't get it. why are you doing this to yourself? infection, pus, pain, throbbing. you write and it seems like you have no control over it and yet you continue to go back and do it over and over. like i said, i just don't understand.

Message: I think the acrylic nails may have caused your thumb infection. You should have the acrylics removed by your nail technician and go see your doctor to have it examined. You shouldn't poke your thumb with a needle because that will just make the infection worse. My aunt got a bad infection from acrylics and one of her fingernails even rotted off, but she still wears them. I strongly suggest that you not get any more acrylics because you'll eventually destroy your own nails.

Message: i have removed my acrylic nails as i have had two finger nails with infection in them i am about to visit my doctor for hopefully a cure. the pain was there the swelling and then my natural nail became discoloured and has now fallen off i only have half a natural nail which looks disgusting. i am training to be a nail technician and open my own business but now i am having second thoughts as i would not like this to happen to anyone else. the lady who does my nails DOES NOT sanitize which i beleive is where the problem lies.

Message: julie,
my first question to you is "why did you continue to return to someone you knew was not sanitizing their instruments"? training to be a nail tech you should know what types of diseases are transmitted this way. you are lucky an infection is all you have. a heck of a way to get hepatitis or aids wouldn't you say? heal your infections, go to school and learn how to be the very best manicurist you can be. don't waste your time on learning how to destroy nails with acrylics.

Message: Julie. I know how you feel. I used kiss glue on nails for 15 years. They are OFF now! I was geting blisters on my toes but never thought it could be related to my finger nails. I tryed to treat my toes for a couple of weeks and realized I needed to go to my dr. He had me take off my artifical nails and he immeditly knew the source of my infection. He took a culture of the blisters on my toes and it can back as staph infection. It is scary,,,i have been sick and having to take tons of antibotics. I think it will take a while before I am well but I hope people will read this and beware! My fingernails were also infected.Around the nail is inflamed and red. I know this sounds crazy but I miss having my nails and I am dont even want to go out of my house for fear of people seeing them, but it beats the infection which btw will kill you if you are not careful!
Good luck to you and keep me posted on your progress!

Message: Hi Shelly
I noticed you wrote about your infected thumb back in June.I sure hope you've been to a doctor & that your thumb is healed by now.
I had what sounds like exactly the same thing back in January on my pinkie nail. It's called "Paronychia". I was immediately put on strong antibiotics and the infection healed quickly. Please, anyone, see a doctor if you have anything similar to this.
