Subject: Ideas/Help/Solutions.....anything
Message: Hi everyone. For those who dont want to hear about acrylic nails - pass over this thread now. Those who like a challenge - read on.
I have very very poor natural nails. Runs in the family. My mother has them, my brother and anyone whose hands you care to look at on the maternal side.
5 years ago I got a full set of acrylics. Wow. What a difference. I was so pleased with the result. Things went along happily for 4.5 years. I went to the same girl each time and life was sweet. 6 months ago, I got my refills done. My cuticles were a little red and strangely itchy. Didnt take a great deal of notice and concluded that since I have immensely dry skin, this probably was just my hands yelling out for moisture. I rubbed in hand cream and continued on.
Over the next few months, each refill brought harsher results and I got rather perplexed about it. I changed to gels. Hated them but in the meantime my cuticles had returned to normal and were no longer irritated. I went back to acrylics last week. With 4 hours of having them done, the itch started. This time it was cuticle, around the nail edge and under the nail tip. As time went on, blisters developed on all cuticles and around the nail edge. Ice water was the only thing that made it "go away" Within 24 hours the blisters were filled with fluid, and the skin around my nails cracked and split. As the fluid dried over the next couple of days, my nails and the tips of my fingers parted company, the cuticles look like "heel" skin and they bled from every which way. I can only just use the keyboard even now although things are hugely improved. Can anyone tell me what the heck happened? And by the way, there has been no change in the products we have used or the techinician that has cared for me. I am at a loss to understand and more importantly, have no idea what to do now as my own nails are thin, discoloured and have, because of the bleeding, become bruising looking and awful. In any case, my own natural nails were always woeful and ugly. Comments, ideas????

Message: I wore acrylic nails for over 20 yrs. with no problems until about 3 months ago. At that time, my finger tips started cracking, peeling and bleeding something terrible (a ghastly sight). The person who did my nails also noticed that the white part of my nails were starting to go all the way down to my cuticle. I saw one doctor and he took some clippings of my nails and the lab results indicated no fungus. I took off the acrylics and had very little nail left on all fingers. After a couple more trips to the doctor with little positive results, I went to a dermatologist. She told me I had probably developed an allergy to something in the acrylic product. I am using Lotrimin cream and Lamisil cream and vaseline on my nails plus taking Biotin. It takes 6 months to grow a new nail so I am hoping my nails grow back better and stronger than they were BEFORE acrylics so that I won't have the urge to put acrylics back on.

Message: I'm sorry, but I just can not wrap my mind around the thought that you could, even in your wildest dreams, consider for even an instant, putting any topical treatments back on you nails!
What is it that drives you to that? And I am not trying to be ugly here, I am just really grasping at straws to undestand this.
I do hope your nails will all be 100% and better than even you imagine.

Message: Gail,
stop putting on the lotrimin and lamisil. you don't have a fungus and you're just wasting your money, not to mention the mess i'm sure it is. biotin is useless too. your own nails were so thinned out that they completely pulled away from the nail bed. i can't believe someone would continue to fill them, like that. it's irresponsible. if you put the acrylics back on the reaction is going to be worse than it was this time-guaranteed. you can grow your own healthy nails. if you want strong nails, then you have to let us know. i am here in new york, just a customer that sees the results everyday and barbara, the owner of this site and product, in georgia. i have no motive other than trying to get people to grow their own healthy nails. acrylics are just destroying womens nails. no one can see that far down the road it seems. i get tired of answering the same acrylic nail questions everyday. but, if your serious about not going back to acrylics this is the place to be.

Message: I don’t understand, why doctor prescribe you antifungal medicine if you have allergic reaction to acrylic. It takes up to 6 months to grow a new nail, not 6 months. I noticed during summer time fingernails grow mach faster. All you need is nail growth formula and good diet. It might take only 2,5-3 months. I use this cream for only one month (after I removed acrylic), and results are amazing. My nails grow more then one third of their length which are ½ inch long in overage. I also take multivitamins to help my nails from inside as well. If you suspect fungus take acidophilus and garlic supplements along with low sugar diet. Fungus breeds on sugar. I wish you luck and healthy nails.

Message: carmen,
Gail received comments because it seems like she really would like to grow her own nails stronger than before. she seemed ready to give up acrylics. who knows whether she really is ready or not, but it seemed like she was getting the run around from doctors just guessing at what was really wrong. i don't like to see people being taken advantage of when they are just looking for answers. you, on the other hand, just keep going back, over and over again, for more torture. you are allergic to them. you can go for years without being allergic and then your immune system finally says-that's enough. it happens everyday. you say your own nails were woeful and ugly? so blisters, bruises, bleeding, pain, and your nails peeling away from your fingers are better? once would have been enough for me. no challenge here. take them off, keep them off, and grow your nails and stop blaming genetics

Message: Cheryl is right, Carmen. You developed an allergy to acrylic. That means you can’t use acrylic or similar product on your nails anymore. If you would have allergy to peanuts, would you eat peanut butter? I don’t think so. Don’t injure yourself more then you did already. STOP!!! Take acrylic off if you didn’t already.
There is the reason why members of your family have weak nails. Are you healthy? Are you strong? Are you energetic?
Maybe you need to change your diet? I have no idea about eating habits in your family.
Everything can be changed if you eat oatmeal instead of pancakes, salmon with stemmed vegetables instead of hamburger and french fries, and fruit salad instead of cookies, for example. If this is not a case, maybe something else is wrong. Think about it.
Right now help your damaged fingernails with a right treat. Show your hands to a doctor, he can recommend you something. When cuticles get healed, go next step, and start to grow your nails.
To strengthen the nails use warm olive oil to soak them in it for 10-20 min. daily.
Soften cuticles with baby oil or cream and gently push back. Do not cut them.
Soak your nails before trimming them.
You may also use nail strengthener like nailtiques.
Or purchase nail growth formula from this site and replace all of the above.
Good luck.

Message: Cheryl; you come across like an angry school teacher chastising little children. We hear you - you want us to use your products and grow our own nails. That is clear from every post you make but I was wanting a little advice as to how to get over the immediate problem of nursing my own nails back to health whilst letting the acryclics grow out. You dont need to be a rocket scientist to work out that I have an allergy - I worked it out too. Who blamed genetics? What a strange attitude from someone who is supposed to provide professional advice!
To you Olga, thank you for your intelligent comments and I will try your suggestions and see how I go. At least you provided some suggestions and I am grateful to you.

Message: carmen,
first, these ARE NOT my products. i am just a consumer of this product. i'm not a professional nail anything. you would know that if you went back to earlier posts. don't assume anything. i buy it just like everyone else and i do not put that in every post. this forum, for god's sake, is part of a web page, owned by barbara wheeler and her husband, that sells these products. this forum is just something, i'm sure, barbara thought would be a nice addition to try and help people out-with their natural nails. i'm trying, with all the patience i can muster, to answer these questions with all the common sense and straight-forwardness i can find. barbara provides this forum as way for people to ask questions and get answers about Natural Nails, not acrylics. this forum has never been about acrylics,it's about growing our own natural nails strong and healthy. these kind of questions are what i was trying to avoid answering, as i wrote about in an earlier post, which i'm sure you saw. you need to go back and re-read your initial post. ninety nine percent of the post was about the symptoms you were experiencing time after time after time. to quote you,"can anyone tell me what the heck happened?", "i am at a loss to understand."-that tends to make me believe you have no idea what is happening everytime you get them filled in. i can't read between the lines. if you don't put it in, then how do any of us know the facts? these types of questions are the reason i made the decision to stop answering acrylic nightmare questions. you kept at it until i came back in against my own better judgement. once again, i'm sorry i got "sucked back in". thanks.
