Subject: acrylic nails
Message: I recently got acrylic nails done for the first time at a nail salon. I didn't know about the MMA chemical which is harmful and I have no idea whether it was used on me or not because i didn't know about this issue until now. I just wanted to know if the MMA chemical is found in nail glues, gels, powders, or in what other forms can it be found in? Thanx.

Message: krystal,
first, MMA is banned from being used in nail salons by the FDA, but many do get around it. it is found in the liquid part of the application process. when they dip the brush into the liquid, then into the acrylic powder to form the ball of acrylic, the liquid part is what has the MMA in it. that's the only thing that has MMA in it. the only way you are going to know is if you go back and ask, and they probably aren't going to tell you the truth if they are using it, because it is illegal. monomer with MMA hardens much quicker, adheres to the natural nail more because the nail has to be "roughed up " more, so that if you accidently whack your acrylic nail your own nail will also come off. it's bad stuff. MMA also doesn't take to acetone remover when you're trying to remove them. they usually have to be filed off. another trauma to add to the insult of getting these things. when you go to have them filled in ask to see the bottle of monomer with a label on it. sorry, that's the best i can do.
