Subject: Big toe nail 'ripped' off
Message: Ok - slipped into wifes big toe and it pull the nail up - was not pretty.
back of nail is still attached - some skin on side was damaged.
I have dealt with damaged nails (smashed with hammer etc) but not ripped from skin.
I have antibiotic on it and bandaged the toe.
Doing to have her trim the nail back - as much as possible to keep from the nail hitting things.
1: re-growth - yes, no, maybe so? Again - all of mine have grown back but those were from shash damage.
2: anything to do ( beside pain medicine?)
Thanks
Dan

Message: Dan,
yow. i would say yes on growing back. smashing injuries are usually more damaging than rips. it could take anywhere from 3-6 months for a new nail. soaking in epsom salts and very warm water will help with the pain and draw some of the swelling down. eventually take off the bandage and give it some air, but keep it clean. sounds like you're doing all the right things.
