Subject: How do I treat a nail that is going to fall off?
Message: just over a month ago, i slammed my pointer finger in the car door. now, when i say slam, i mean i had to open the car door to get my finger out! OUCH! This happened right at the bottom of of my nail.. and the entire lower half of my nail turned black and blue. in hopes to prevent my nail from falling off, i used the hot pin method and got out all the blood, and relieved the pressure! as my nail has grown it is now getting to the point where the dried blood that is left is reaching the end of my nail. only a small portion has reached that point, as the hurt part streches across ALMOST all of my nail, there is still part of it that hasnt reached nail end. the part that has, is lifting...
i'm 23, and ive never had a nail even close to fall off... im kinda freaking out here!
please help me. i just want to know what to do if it does fall off. I also should tell you that there is new growth at the bottom, still attached, and looks to be a healthy nail.. but like i said, its still attached to the nail that is lifting. do i cut it down, once it lifts all the way across? i'm just very confused, and i dont know what to do!
any and all info you can supply would be great!
thanks to you all sooooo much!!

Message: Angela,
i would keep it as short as you can for now until you get some more growth. so many worse things could have happened but didn't-like, you could have damaged the matrix, the living, growing part of your nail, so much that your nail won't grow at all, the nail that is growing again could have decided to grow down instead of on out, or you could have damaged the joint a lot more. sounds like the injury you did to it is slowly healing. it's just going to take some time and extra care to not hurt the nail anymore. massage some cuticle oil with vitamin e in it every night and that will help with restoring good circulation and get that nail to grow on out. sounds like it will be fine. just give it some time.
