Message: I am also interested in detailed instructions on how to properly buff fingernails...like direction (up and down? round and round?), how long per nail, and how often. I have been watching for a reply.

Message: first, you need a cowhide buffer, for its softness. sort of like using a chamois cloth for drying a car. something that's durable and holds up well, depending on if you are buffing with a buffing cream or not, will determine how much pressure you need to apply. the buffing cream, found on this site, has a slight "grit" to it, so it does not require much pressure, but does a great shine, with minimal pressure-which is a good thing in my mind. try to go in one direction-straight across, or up and down, with light strokes. over doing is not a good thing in buffing. if your nails are thin anyway, it will make them thinner. once every 2 to 3 weeks is plenty. you just have to figure out your own time schedule for how often they need it. if you feel "heat" while you are buffing then it's too much pressure-stop. sorry i didn't answer sooner, but there are a lot of "youngster's" out here just messin' around not really looking for answers. it's kind of hard to tell who's for real.

Message: You can get many different kinds of buffers these days. I prefer a padded three-way buffer, and go across the nail from the roughest side finishing up with the smooth polishing side. I use it when I give myself a manicure and mine always come up looking like glass! And I also find that my nail polish applies easier too.

Message: If your nails are thin and weak, buffing is not the best idea until you build up their strength and durability. If your nails are in good health, just simply apply LIGHT pressure and stroke the nails. Some people use a gentle back and forth motion, others stroke in one direction. Generally, what ever is most comfortable and works best for you is the right way.
If you use a buffing cream, take care to use a feather light touch, so as not to damage the surface of the nails, if the buffing agent has an abrasive to help smooth out surface imperfections.
If there is not "grit" to the buffing cream and it is designed just for shine and gloss, you may in deed use a bit more pressure, but don't over do it! Moderation in all things is a key to live by.
