Subject: Toenail deformity
Message: I have what appears to be an extra toenail on the side of each little toe. It is right next to the main toenail. I clip it off every week but it keeps coming back. What is this and what can I do to permanently remove it?

Message: i think what you have is something like a callus on each little toe. my mom has them, always has. just an outgrowth of skin that has hardened. be careful and don't go too deep when clipping. you don't want an infection. the only other way i know to remove it is to soften it up by moisturizing it.

Message: I have those same little "extra nail" on my little toes. My podiatrist says it's because of how the toe nail matrix grows. She says it's not harmful and it's ok for me just to clip them off as they grow. I do this regularly because when they grow out too long, they catch on socks and stockings, pull away from the main nail and hurt! But mostly they're just an annoyance I can live with.
