Subject: nail beds receding!
Message: all my life my nail beds grew right to the end of my fingertips, so as you can imagine i never had a lot of white nail past my free edge and i alwys had a nice neat slightly curved border between pink and white.
but about a month ago i noticed that small parts of the end of my nail were separating from the beds then the portion of nail bed itself would go hard and crusty and then disappear. this has continued slowly, and on my left ring-finger in particular the nail bed has receded quite far.
the border between pink and white is very irregular and sloped and i can actually see the nail bed through my nail go crusty before it simply turns to white nail.
i can't find any information about this on the internet and i have no idea why it's happening. i've read about onycholysis but they never mention anything about the nail bed receding - always that it will re-attatch when the new nail grows out.
particularly i need to know that if the nail bed has gone, will it grow out back to where it was before?
this has been really distressing me and i don't know why its happening! any ideas?
thanks

Message: well i've been to my chiropodist before writing this but he said there was nothing wrong with them. i presume he'd think this because he didn't know what they looked like before - they still look OKAY for a guy's nails (which are never very nice) at the moment but the point is they're very slowly getting worse - i did have very feminine looking nails.
my doctor before that said it could be vitimin deficiency (very likely) but that doesnt really explain why they keep lifting and the nail bed still recedes. he has scheduled a blood test to check it isnt thyroid problem tho.
what i need to know though, is that when new nail grows out, will my nail beds grow back to where they were or are they going to stay where they are? i cant really find out anything about how nail beds grow or dont grow

Message: Paul, for a doctor to tell you that nothing is wrong when obviously there is, is not right. i had to go look up chiropodist because i wasn't really sure what that was! a foot doctor. i still believe you should see a dermatologist. it seems to me to be more of a skin condition, whether it's fungal or bacteria or something completely different, i don't know. i would insist a nail clipping be taken and examined for fungus or something else and go from there. until you find out exactly what is causing this, any new nails are going to continue to lift. you've got to identify and then get rid of the problem. i really doubt it is a vitamin defficiency. you would have to be so incredibly defficient in vitamins and minerals, it would show up in so many other ways first. sometimes "vitamin defficiency" is a convienient answer for, "i don't know". keep asking until you find someone who has seen it before and can truly help you.

Message: thanks cheryl for the advice, it's nice somebody's taking it seriously!
i was under the impression a chiropodist/podiatrist was a feet/hands specialist but yeah i looked it up and you're right. i'll take your advice and look for a dermatologist, cuz no-one's actually given me a straight answer yet. the doctor tried to help but didn't know and the chiropodist was convinced nothing was wrong.

Message: i've had a blood test and the results will be in by the end of the week. in the meantime the onycholysis has continued, and im going to demand to be referred to a dermatologist if it doesn't turn out to be a thyroid problem or soemthing else that could show up on the test.
i've doen a bit of reading and apparently if it happens on all your nails it tends to be either an overactive thyroid gland or iron deficiency.
it seems like not a lot of people know about it in the profession, but ive been given the number of one of the best dermatologists in the country and he lives right on my doorstep! ^__^

Message: i can't answer this question myself really cuz i never really 'studied' my nails much before this started happening lol, but here it goes...
i've noticed since this started that below my free edge theres a very faint white line going across my nails following the shape of the free edge. is this normal? its definately not on the nail plate and looks as if its under the nail on the bed.
and yes it gets lower as my nail beds do.
ps. my blood test results came in - totally normal. the mystery deepens and my doctors still havnt given me any answers, ah well! i cant get to a dermatologist without my GP referring me to one either dagnabbit.

Message: Hi Paul,
Request your doctor make the referral. That seems the logical next step. If he wont, find another doctor.
