Message: it has a chance of growing back because the nail was not apparently crushed. a new nail will slowly grow back. in the meantime keep a bandaid on it with some neosporin creme to keep it from getting infected and to keep it moist, especially at night. it could take 3 to 4 months to grow a new one-be patient.

Message: I just had my nail ripped off yesterday and i have been keeping neosporin with the pain relief on it. I let it dry out for about 1-2 hours and then bandage it up. Eventually it will grow back, but the skin part will be really tender. I totally understand how your friend feels. best of luck!

Message: yow! i remember the pain. letting it "dry out" and getting some air to it is always a good idea. just be sure and keep it clean.

Message: I just did this two weeks ago... it is still attached at the nail bed... but it gets hit all the time... i didnt cut the nail off because i figured the protection over the finger would be better. I have been using tea tree oil which works well.

Message: doesn't it hurt when it gets hit? a new, healthy nail has a better chance of growing on a "bare" surface. i think i would want the skin underneath to toughen up a bit instead of getting hit all the time.

Message: Yeah it does hurt like hell.. but its still really really attached... and I think it would hurt worse to rip it all the way out. Maybe I'm wrong... any suggestions

Message: Laura,
i remember the pain! i raked my thumbnail down a wall and my nail flipped back. i decided to just take it off after about two days of walking around with a bandaid wrapped around it,trying to figure out what to do. it grew back just fine. if yours is still really attached then wrap a bandaid around it, just be more careful, and wait and see what happens. it's not going to re-attach where it's seperated from the nail bed. for the pain or swelling, soak in epsom salts and warm water. good luck.

Message: I have had a bandaid around it and I wear a finger tip splint when im at work... to protect it... I spend most of my days stocking dog food and other stuff. I figured it wouldnt re-attach... but the other side is still attached really well... odd how that works out... thanks for the advice. I was worried about it growing back alright but I have read about a lot of people having the same thing happen... I feel better now ... thanks
