Subject: filing
Message: this probably sounds a silly question, but how often should you file your nails. Can filing them too much weaken them?. I file mine about once a week, if that, but not sure if thats not enough or if its too much. thanks

Message: Karen,
no, not a silly question at all. too much filing can weaken nails, especially long nails, by creating small fissures in a nail that could be weakened already by length. just keep your nails at a resaonable length and that shouldn't happen. you should also file them in one direction only-from the side to the middle preferably. the wonder stone file, from this web site, is the only file i've found that actually seals the end of the nail as you file. just remember, one of the biggest culprits of splitting or peeling nails is dehydration and handwashing. nails should be soft and supple, not hard and jagged.

Message: Thanks cheryl, but am bit confused , wondering then why are we allowed (and encouraged) to file back and forth with the wonder stone file and not with any other files. Is it the stone that absorbs the moisture? or how does it work - cause if it makes my nails better i may buy one

Message: Karen,
The reason you can file in both directions with the wonderstone is because of the composition of the stone itself. If you use sandpaper, which is what an emory board is made of, it literally shreds the fabric of the nails if you go against the grain. The wonder stone is soaked in water and kept moist through out the process. It takes a bit longer to file the nails down and shape them properly, but instead of shredding the nails it actually seals the tips of the nails and prevents the loss of natural oils and moisture balance.
