 Subject: GEL NAILS?

I would like to know how safe GEL nails are?
I have nice nails rite now but my nails always seem to break and i can never seem to get them filed rite which causes snagging! My friend currenly has the gel nails and she loves them she told me they will not damage my nails etc.
How does everyone feeli about GEL NAILS?

Gel nails, like acrylics, silk wraps, fibreglass nails etc will fundamentally damage your nails because the tech will file down the nail bed to get the product to adhere to the nail. Unlike Acrylics, Gels are painted on like honey and cured under a UV light. They do not smell, look more natural then acrylics and have a permanent shine to them. Though some claim that Acrylics adhere better to the nail, many say that gels will have the same effects should you get them done properly.
If you already have nice nails then why do you want enhancements? Yes they will look pretty but they will damage your nails and are a constant upkeep that can get pretty expensive.
When filing your nails, file only in one direction, NEVER back and forth, working from the outside to the middle of the nail, then the other side of the nail. You will find they will snag less this way. Also improve your diet and get regular manicures and apply a nourishing cuticle oil and you will find that your nails will grow healthy and strong.
After all, our hair and nails are and outward reflection of how healthy we are on the inside.

everything gypsy said, ditto. gel nails, if they truly are that, need a nail bed that's still "roughed up" in order to form a surface to bond to. acrylic nails do need more of an etched surface and the nail plate is destroyed more, but whether it's with a nail file or a drill, the natural nail is stripped of layers of healthy nail in both cases. although chemicals are mixed and applied everytime you go for a fill whether it's acrylics or gels, it's what they do to the nail bed before that is the most damaging. it may seem like the thing to do right now, but in 1 month or a year or 3 years, your own nails will be destroyed under them.

ladies you lack some knowledge i see. nails grow right? so even if artificial nails get them damaged, they can still grow out healthy again (unless you have some kind of disease). so the damage isnt forever.

Fake nails can create the conditions for all sorts of long range health issues, including the permanent removal of the natural nails. That is not something to be taken lightly. The health risks from unclean implements can be life threatening and in some instances can cause death.
Things bonded to the surface of the natural nails are not of ANY health benefit regardless of their name!
Investing the time and a little money into the natural nails will far out weigh any of the costs of the fakes at any price.
I just know of the horrors I have seen and heard about since I put this site together. And I can't begin to imagine that I would want to waste all that time and money in a place that could potentially ruin my own nails. And this is not to say that there are not some wonderful people that "do" these nails for others, and genuinely care about the health of their customers. So don't go getting any knickers in a wadddddddddddddd! I am not trying to stop anyone from going for it if they want the fake nails. Be informed and a little common sense goes a long way too!

In my many many years of getting my nails done, I have tried it all from acrylics, gels, wraps etc. Gels do NOT remove easily. They will not melt of disolve in acetone to remove. I would really think long and hard before I get gels. Everything these ladies have said prior to my post are dead on!
