Subject: slammed finger in car door
Message: Hey I posted on another topic but the maximum number of replies has been reached so I'm posting a new message here.
Anyway I slammed my finger in a car door and the nail is slowly growing out. I was just wondering how the nail would grow back and if there was anything I could do to ensure it doesn't become deformed. The nail bed is mostly smooth but there is one lumpy scar. Will a doctor be able to help me with this problem or is it up to fate now?
Please help!!!!
Thank you

Message: Kate,
nails grow both from beneath and out. keratin is formed in the lunula, the root, and then pushed up and out to form the new hard nail bed. at this point it is up to fate and luck. if you had damaged the matrix, where the new nail growth starts, then you would have had no nail growth. just give it time and see if the scar will grow on out with the nail. nails are very forgiving but you have to be patient. they grow very slowly and even slower when they are injured. do a google search and put in "how do fingernails grow", and you will get a lot more information.
