I've just gotten acrylic nails to overcome my 20-year nail biting problem and am wondering whether the nail beds will eventually grow back normally. Ie. My nail beds are very short from long-term biting, and my question is whether or not once the acrylic nail grows out and the new nail grows in, will it ever become normal again, or have I permanently damaged my nail bed and it will never recover?
Are there any successful nail biters who have stopped, and who have achieved a nice, long nail bed with regular nails?
Any replies will be greatly appreciated!!!

i had bitten nails-and i mean sometimes completely bitten away- from the age of 4 until i was 36. so, that was quite a few years of gnawing. i did the acrylic thing for a while and that just destroyed them even further. i have regular, strong, healthy, nails now, but it didn't happen overnight. i used the product found on this site, regularly and have taken care of them and most importantly, not expected perfection out of each one of them. they are not, all 10, perfect, all the time, but they are mine and they are healthy and growing, for the first time in my life. your nail beds will recover, but it will take months, not days. it took years for them to get that way and you can't expect immediate, overnight results. get the acrylics off, because you are just delaying the healing process. they end up making the nail beds so much thinner. it can be done. they will grow.

:( i have gotten very short nails recently. i think the word is nail bed? where the nail grows and the nail goes past. I had bitten my nails for years and stopped last year. But i would always tear the last part of the nail off... yes very damaging to the nail and they bleed at times. how can i try o repair this? i would like my nail to grow out but be attached to the skin of my finger. my pinky nails are barely half an inch now an the others are getting smaller and smaller

the nail plate is the pink part, the free edge is the white part. when you say stopped last year, you mean you just stopped gnawing them to nothing. when you tear the last part off, you're still biting. i know all the rationalizations. i bit for 36 years. there is no miracle cure i can give you. they will grow out. it will take months after all the damage done to them. you have to leave them alone or they will be irreversably damaged. decide you've had enough of the bleeding and pain and quit. will power and a desire to stop is what it takes.

I have been niting my nails for 32 years I stopped a month ago and my nails are long.All I did is stop bitting,polished them, and put nail harder.

Having bitten my nails since I was 4, i have had many failed attempts of growing my nails. I have found arcylic nails the best method of letting them grow whilst not being able to bite them, but professional removal and manicure is the only way. I let mine grow under acrylics, but after improper removal, they were all flakey and didn't last two minutes. The last time I had clear acrylic for the whole of the nail, and just used polish to make them look nice. When I removed the polish each time, I could see the real nail growing underneath, which meant I knew when they were ready to come off. I would suggest that for people who get used to using the acrylics as 'tools' (I know you shouldn't, but when that sticker needs peeling...), to keep one acrylic on the nail used most often (or bitten most often) for a few weeks longer while you get used to the rest of your new, beautiful nails. Yes, expect a few 'catch and tear' casualties just after having acrylics removed, but just make sure each edge is smooth and use paint on strengthener.

The topical treatments will weaken the natural nail and can create problems that are totally avoidable. Not a great suggestion I'm afraid. Exchange the bad habit for something else that will benefit, like rubbing in our Natural Nails Growth Formula. It stimulates cell activity and promote strength as well as a more rapid growth pattern.

i'm sorry, but "new, beautiful nails" under acrylics were not a possibility, at least not for me. there was nothing left of my own nails when the acrylics were removed, not to mention the soreness,swelling, and sensitivity just to my fingers alone. i wouldn't suggest it as an alternative to biting either. when they come off, the habit is still there and made even easier by weakened nails. work on the bad habit first, then strengthen and grow the nails. in the long run it's the only thing that works.

I have never experienced for myself, or seen, or even heard of, anyone that ever had acrylic nails that had beautiful nails growing underneath. The truth is that more and more women are going natural because of what is underneath those acrylics. What is hidden from sight is thin, peeling, wrecked nails that will tear in a flash and are usually very sore and sometimes ugly from lumps, bumps and fungus. Everytime I see a lady with nail enhancements, I just can't seen to help but think how pitiful her real nails are under there. Some say that they get enhancements because their natural nails are in such bad shape.....that is sad...because what they will find out once the enhancements are removed will really dishearten them. Then it will be back to square one.....if they are lucky! Been there, done that!
