Subject: Nail not growing back properly
Message: A few months ago, I stupidly pulled a peeled bit of fingernail out from under the cuticle, which caused the whole nail to fall off.
Since then a new nail has been unable to grow back properly. It tries to grow, but is very bumpy and only seems to grow back in bits, the whole nail bed is very rough and sensitive but not really painful.
Do you have any advice?

Message: Rae,
so, the entire nail fell off when you peeled a bit of nail back? is there more to this? nails just don't fall off unless there's a lot of trauma done. can't help if i don't know the whole story.

Message: Hi!
I live in Spain and I have discovered this website looking for a solution for my son's nail problem in internet.
My son slammed his right thumb on a door when he was one year old. His thumb broke where the cuticle grows. At the emergency room they pulled his nail off and stiched him. Since then (he is now 14) his nail comes out in sereral directions and the surface of the nail is very irregular. In other words, his thumb looks horrible. We have seen lots of doctors and they all say there is nothing to do as the nail matrix was damaged and the nail cannot grow normal again.
One doctor told us to remove surgically the matrix forever so that nail will never grow again which he believed would be better than having a nail with a deformity. We don't know what to do. What does the finger look like then, without nail?
I would like to ask those who don't have nails at all if they would rather have an ugly nail than the finger without nail. Please give me an advice.
Thank you so much.

I must admit, I used to bite my nails a lot until a few years ago, but now I'm more of a picker and I'm trying my hardest to get out of this habit.
Originally, I pulled a bit of peeled nail from under the cuticle area, this caused the area to weep a small bit and eventually the nail came off bit by bit.
Now I'm just left with a really rough, bumpy nail bed , the nail has attempted to grow, but doesn't seem to manage it completely. At the moment I'm rubbing vaseline into the area and use lots of hand cream.
Do you think the nail will eventually grow back normally, or have I done permanent damage?

Message: Rae,
thank you for mailing back with more information. a lot of people don't. sounds like you really did a number on that nail and it didn't like it one bit. i bit, gnawed, chewed, ripped and any other abuse you can think of to my own for 35+ years and many times i didn't think there was any way they would grow back normally, but they did-and this time, for the last time. it's just so hard to say if you will have a normal nail. so many factors involved. if you really damaged the nail bed or the growing tissue beneath, then i would say no. all it takes is some time and patience to let it heal and grow, no matter how deformed it looks. that's going to be the only way you will know for sure. it's going to take months, not days, because it took a while to get them in this horrible condition and it takes a while to get them back. if you really are ready to stop then you will. if your not, then you won't. it comes down to-are you really just sick and tired of bitting, picking, just plain abusing them, and all the pain and discomfort? vitamin e oil will work much better at softening up the bumpy nail then vasoleine. make sure the lotion you use doesn't have mineral oil as an ingredient. it never sinks in, and just washes right off. i'll be happy to try and answer anymore questions you might have. the decision is yours.

I used to be a nail biter until a few years ago, now I'm more of a picker. I pulled off a bit of peeled nail from under the cuticle. This area then weeped for a day or so and eventually the nail came off bit by bit.
Now I'm left with a bumpy, very rough nail bed, The nail tries to grow back but usually splits vertically before it gets a chance to grow properly.
I'm massaging the area with Vaseline regularly and use hand cream. Do you think the nail will ever grow normally?
Thanks

Message: Hi,
I crushed my fingernail in the car door about a month ago and it's gradually growing out but hasn't fallen off or grown out yet. I'm worried about whether a new one will grow back. The bottom half of the nail bed is rough and bumpy, will vitamin e cream help this problem?
Thanks

Message: Hi, Kate again.
I forgot to ask, if the nail grows back how will it happen? does a new nail grow from the cuticle upwards or does the nail bed harden to form a new nail? That sounds like a stupid question but I'm 17 so I'm allowed to be uninformed :)
Thanks again :)
